1st XV - Match centre

Bec Old Boys
Sat 28 Jan 14:15 - London & SE Division - Surrey 2 Attendance 50

A game that is best put to one side was the post-match agreement between coaching staff Maynard and Powley.
Chipstead forward dominance yet again was clear to see. Bec’s scrum was turned 90’ on every occasion and they were forced to live on scraps for most of 40 minutes.
In the first 35 minutes Bec only got into Chipstead half through touch kicks following penalties.
Following a side stepping run Dan Martin found himself 5m out and with 3 subsequent rucks Chipstead were looking to score. Only a lack of support at the breakdown denied them a try.
Bec only succeeded to threaten once and cut through Chipstead defence but some panic passing 5 meters out gave a knock on and a subsequent Solid Chipstead Scrum. Guy Maynard was able to clear Chips line despite being put under strong pressure.
Both teams missed easy penalties early on but following a infringement in a ruck in front of their own posts Chipstead found themselves 3 points down at half time.
Even non betting Powley was prepared to put money on Chipstead getting 30 points in the second 40 playing down hill.
Within 4 minutes of the restart the bet was looking good when Pat Kitz with great vision intercepted a pass 22m out and touch down under the posts. Dan Martin got the score 3-7 with the conversion.
Guy Maynard making good use of the slope put an intelligent kick through at the Bec fullback.
Not being put under pressure he was able to counter attack and with some confusion in the Chipstead defence they got a converted try. 10-7. Captain Jim Demeza was not deterred and rallied the team. They applied pressure on Bec Old Boys only to be defeated by some poor tackling and the hunger that Bec had in their spirit to win.
From a speculative kick through and a lucky bounce Bec got a second try again converted.
The third Bec try came from quick recycling at the ruck and a strong outside run from their No 13.
Chipstead showed the spirit that they are renowned for and were not going down easy. Following some structured rucking that put Bec on the back foot, Martin (Forrest) Floodgate found himself on a run that his nick name come from. He scored under the posts to allow Dan Martin to end the game 22-14.
A good debutant appearance by James Honeywell and Kieran Dupe in the back row. Returning from injury saw a welcome return of Jake Howe. Unfortunately only to be side-lined for three weeks with a broken finger. This only adds to the big injury list that Chipstead have had in the past two weeks with four 1stxv players now out of action for 6 plus weeks.
Next week Chipstead return to home ground against Old Reigations. With a Vice –presidents Lunch and a precarious League position to play for ‘The Meads’ is the place to be on Saturday 4th Feburary.
