League WIN Vs Old Reigatians
A hard fought league WIN to secure 5 further points plus 1 bonus point to keep us in contention for the league!
U16s league WIN vs Old Reigatians (04/03/12)
Who says it never rains but it pours!!! To say the heavens opened and it was a bit muddy at Old Reigatians this Sunday has to be the understatement of the year!
This Sunday saw Chipstead U16s away to Old Reigatians for our next league fixture.
The game kicked off and owing to the extremely wet conditions is was apparent ball handling was going to be an issue for both sides. A competitive game ensued with both sides keen to advance on the other. Reigatians’ forwards won some of the loose ball to be thwarted by Chipstead and Chipstead backs tried to exploit gaps only to be stopped short. As both teams got muddier and muddier neither could convert their efforts into points. Chipstead made use of some good kicking opportunities to gain ground and this was finally rewarded in the 18th minute when a kick through saw the ball bouncing over the Old Reigatians try line where Matt Wood-Thatcher managed to get that crucial downward pressure on it just as the ball went out over the dead ball line, to put Chipstead in the lead. Despite efforts from both sides neither was able to benefit from their efforts to score.
Half time Chipstead lead 5 – 0 with all still to play for.
Second half commenced with some substitutions and changes to the Chipstead side but no change to the continuous down pour making the mud bath getting even deeper!
After a half time talk Chipstead set off with more vigour and put Reigatians under pressure but again the poor conditions led to poor handling with “knock ons” by both sides. Chipstead lost their form with the lineout’s and lost virtually every one that Reigatians were keen to capitalise on. Soon into the half Reigatians scored their first unconverted try to bring the score line even. Chipstead continue to drive forward at every chance. Reigatians then came together to put Chipstead under pressure and made ground requiring some good tackles from individuals, notable Harry Dudley in the forwards whose work rate throughout was great. Tom Clarke was able to seize the ball to exploit a gap and find himself clear to score Chipstead second try that he was also able to convert to put Chipstead back into the lead. Reigatians continued to contest for all ball and found themselves back in Chipstead half for a period that led to errors by Chipstead that they seized upon to score two further tries, one converted, to take the lead from Chipstead. Undeterred Chipstead dig in deep and saw a loose ball grub kicked ahead for Jordan “JC” Cope to show his speed and beat the Reigatians defenders to score again fro Chipstead to put us level with Old Reigatians 17 all with only minutes to go. Reigate put Chipstead under further pressure in our own half before we were able to use a good kick to gain ground and take the pressure off to put us back in their half. This led to Old Reigatians having to soak up a lot of Chipstead pressure before they conceded a penalty in their “22.” Chipstead used this to provide Dudley the crash ball to utilise his power to force himself over the line to score the winning try that was duly converted by Clark.

The atrocious conditions made it hard for both sides with some poor ball handling by Chipstead. Chipstead held their own in the scrums but were poor in the lineouts. Our backs never seemed to come together but ultimately we competed in a hard fought league WIN to secure 5 further points plus 1 bonus point to keep us in contention for the league!
Washing all that mud soaked kit never seems so bad when it resulted in a WIN !!!
Well done all concerned
