League WIN for Chipstead U16s – 21 – 0 Old Cats
U16s WIN Last League game Vs Old Cats
Sunday 25th March 12 saw Chipstead U16s at home to play their last league game of this season against Old Cats. With close league positions throughout this was still to be a close game that may ultimately determine both teams final standings and potential for promotions.
Chipstead kicked off and saw Old Cats placed under immediate pressure with good chasing down by the Chipstead forwards. It was clear that Old Cats had well drilled forwards seeking to compete for any ball but Chipstead were there equals.
Chipstead put in some good tackles and won good ball and saw some good attacking moves that required some determined tackling from Old Cats to prevent any score. Chipstead maintained the pressure on Old cats for the first quarter but then allowed Old Cats to get back into the game. After competition by both sets of forwards found Chipstead concede a penalty in their own 22 that Old cats were able to utilise to take a 3 point lead. Chipstead continued to attack at any opportunity and were unlucky to be held up on the line when Harry Dudley tried to force his way over the line only to be held up.
Half time score Chipstead 0 – Old cats 3
Second half commenced with all top play for and both teams keen to gain points. Again both sets of forwards competed well in both scrums and lineouts resulting in some good defensive tackles being required. Chipstead started to take control of the game again and started to utilise their backs better resulting in some good penetrating runs gaining good yardage before being caught. After soaking up much pressure from Old Cats, Chipstead were able to exert more pressure to counter attack. Chipstead strung some good backs passing together that finally resulted in the ball being passed down the line to winger Jordan “JC” Cope who was able to use his strength to exploit a gap and cross the line to score Chipstead first try. This was converted by Tom Clark to give Chipstead the extended lead. Both teams continued to compete for all available ball until again Chipstead were able to feed the ball out wide to “JC” Cope again who despite some desperate Old Cats tacklers was able to score by the corner flag. This too was converted by Clark with a great kick from the touch line. Old Cats continued to try to take possession and attack Chipstead where possible but were unable to capitalise. After further Chipstead advances we found ourselves recycling ball in the Old Cats 22 area and saw Archie Mackay collect the ball and then weave his way passed missed tackles to score a third try for Chipstead that again Clark converted. Neither team could cross the line again before the end resulting in a great WIN for Chipstead U16s – 21 – 0 Old Cats.

A great Spring morning of competitive rugby that saw a great effort from our forwards who competed in every line out and scrum, especially of note was Jordan Mack who secured loose ball and advance. The backs also showed what power and pace they had but this was epitomised by a great personal performance by Archie Mackay who chased down everything and led the charge at every opportunity.
Although at times we appeared to do all the hard work to then miss out the easy bits it was good to see how Chipstead could absorb the pressure applied by Old cats and exert even more in response.
That’s now all our Surrey league games completed for this season winning 5 out of our 7 games – so now only time and statisticians will tell the final league placings
Well done to all players
