What should have been a comfortable victory turned into a tense few moments against a spirited Saddleworth outfit ....
Within 10 minutes of the kick off the Chorley side moved into an early lead with tries from youngster Dean Mattinson and Man of the Match Mick Jessiman. In their minds the match was won and it was just going to be a case of by how many points? But somebody forgot to give Saddleworth the script and the visitors came right back at the Panthers with two scores of their own to reduce the deficit to 12-10 by half time.
A few words of advice from Coach Oxley at the break seemed to do the trick and the home side dominated the opposition from the off with tries from Neil Prescott (2), Jessiman and Joe Murphy. The trusted boot of skipper Rick Wareing added the extra points to give Chorley a 36 - 10 lead going into the final quarter.
But again the visitors came straight back at the Panthers adding two scores of their own before the end of the game. The result was never in doubt but the Chorley team learnt a lesson today in that the game is never over until a certain lady starts singing ... Panthers are you ready, ready ? Yes we are, but only after that whistle is blown on the 80th minute.
Another good, solid performance today against determined opposition. A special mention to teenager David Dale who again topped the tackle count with a tally of 35. Another home game next Saturday when we entertain the Mayfield club from Rochdale.
