First Team On A Roll

Another week, another victory, and it wouldn't be James' if didn't go down to the final over.

For the 2nd week in a row bottom of the table James' faced the team top of the table. After defeating Mossley Hill last week, todays opponent Goose Green replaced them at the top of Division Two.

After a wet morning the rain had fortunately held off, and would so for the rest of the day. All eyes on the toss, with Goose Green calling correct and to the surprise of Michael McNally and his team put James' in to bat.

Opening up with the now familiar partnership of skipper M.McNally and the ever reliable Kieran Higham, a flurry of early runs followed. Unfortunately a lack of communication cost James' the first wicket, with K.Higham being run out, the blame yet the be decided. M.McNally was then joined by the in form S.Foster, averaging over 40 before the start of the game, and a solid partnership was formed. Eventually one big shot too many was to cost McNally his 2nd 50 of the season, falling for 49. The pitch now was becoming increasing harder to bat on and 5 wickets fell for not many, until "Hero" Higham (Matt) came to the crease at no 8. A very responsible innings was to follow from M.Higham ensuring James' batted the full 50 overs and adding 37 runs himself. At half time James' finished on 163 for 8.

The turn around started well for James', with the prize wicket of T.Bennett caught behind off Paul McNally Jr. A spell of good bowling restricted the away side to a slow but steady 50 for 2. Now entering the last 20 overs the draw was looking most likely, with the breakthrough looking harder to come by with every ball bowled. However given a few bowling changes the breakthrough was made, it was now a race against the clock to take the remaining wickets. Stuart Naden, back in the team, was handed the ball and with a couple of difficult chances going down bowled with great control and finished with figures of 3/18. The job was not finished yet, and Goose Green had taken the game into the last over. Needing just over 90 runs off the last over with just the one wicket in hand, survival was the main aim. Paul McNally Jr started the over well with an edge falling just short of 2nd slip. However the next ball brought a slightly thicker edge which flew with pace to gully, who caught with ease and confidence to start great scenes of celebration for the 2nd week in a row.

The win was James' 3rd in a row but wasn't enough to lift them from the foot of the table. However having now beaten two title contenders James' are yet to give up the fight for the league.

With the fixtures now at half-way next weeks games is a reverse of Saturdays fixture, away at Goose Green.
