Under 17’s beat MU Barnhall 36 - 15
Cup final beckons for U17s as they beat MU Barnhall in Naas
Cill Dara U17s advanced to their second final of the season when they saw off a spirited MU Barnhall team in Naas on Sunday. Once again Cill Dara were quickly out of the blocks and with just 2 minutes gone a flowing backs move down the blind side saw Adam Meehan set Conor O’Toole free who beat the last defender with ease and score in the corner. Five minutes later Barnhall got their first score of the game a penalty in front of the posts. Barnhall score again after 13 minutes when some weak Cill Dara defending saw their winger run from inside his own half and beat all in front of him to score a try, 8 -5 to Barnhall. On 15 minutes Conor O’Toole scored his second try of the afternoon when he again put-paced the Barnhall defence and score in the corner. An excellent conversion from Ryan Curran put Cill Dara four ahead. The lead was stretched to 7 after 22 minutes when Ryan slotted a penalty over to give Cill Dara the half-time lead
Half Time: Cill Dara 15 MU Barnhall 8
Cill Dara dominated the second half in terms of procession and territory but struggled to convert their dominance into points. Nine minutes in the pack got their reward when Sam Downey scored from in close, Ryan Curran adding the extra points. Eight minutes later what looked like a certain Cill Dara try turned into a score for Barnhall after the ball went to ground and the Barnhall winger out-sprinted the Cill Dara cover to score a try against the run of play. Four minutes later Cill Dara made the game relatively safe when Tadhg Murtagh picked up a loose ball from the forwards and burrowed his way over. His second try came 5 minutes later when a brilliant kick through from Adam Meehan bounced kindly for him and he rounded the last defender to score beside the posts. With both tries being converted by Ryan Curran the gap was 21 points in the end.
This was a very satisfying win for the lads. The pack dominated the line-out and although under pressure in the scrum they provided the perfect platform for some good free-flowing rugby.
Next up for the lads is the league semi-final when they take on Coolmine away next Sunday. Coolmine defeated Cill Dara in a close game just before Christmas so the lads will not only be out for revenge but also there is the small matter of a final in Donnybrook up for grabs. Bring a friend – it’s sure to be a cracker.
