Inverness Team Nearly Snatches UK Glory
Two 6-a-side football teams from Inverness went all the way to the middle of England last weekend, and one of them came within two games of scooping glory.
The teams, who play in the Leisure Leagues Sunday league on the Bught Road Astroturf, travelled south to Cannock in the Midlands to take on the cream of Leisure Leagues sides in a showpiece finals day which attracted more than 150 teams.
Whilst one of them, Drumnadchrochit Hotel, was unfortunately knocked out in the group stages, the other, Citadel, made it all the way to the quarter finals.
After meeting teams from areas including Braintree and Ellesmere Port in the group stages, "The Mighty Del" made it through to the knockout competition where they beat Rhyl and Loughborough on penalties after a goalless draw and a 2-2 scoreline respectively to earn a place in the last eight.
There was where the adventure ended as they were beaten 4-0 by eventual champions Random Allstars from Widnes, and whilst disappointed, having dreamed of glory, Manager Graham “Flashmeister" Gordon preferred to reflect on what he called "a great weekend."
"We were all delighted we did so well, and we had a fantastic time. All the Leisure Leagues guys were friendly and even the opposition made us jocks feel welcome. We just hope we can have another good season or two so we can make the next tournament."
Thankfully for Graham that looks likely to happen. The Leisure Leagues National cup is held twice yearly and is open to all sides who win or end as runners-up in their leagues, and with Citadel sitting second in the early running they are in prime position to make a return.
Indeed, Leisure Leagues Media Manager Andy Thorley said the team would always be a welcome addition to finals day. "We were all thrilled for Del, Andy enthused. “For teams to come from Scotland and play, as Citadel, Drumnadrochit, and a team from Glenrothes did is brilliant for us and proves we are doing something right. We hope very much to see them there next time, and maybe they will get even further!"
