City 2s out of relegation zone with nervy win
City of Portsmouth 2s put last weeks defeat behind them, as they secured a crucial 4-3 victory in a must win game against relegation rivals Wimborne
City of Portsmouth men's 2's showed no sign of nerves in this vital game, and soon found themselves ahead thanks to a great run and a composed finish by Adam Nicholls from the top of the visitors D.
City extended their lead thanks to a well worked team effort, which culminated in Jack Reed putting in a simple effort thanks to a great cross which found him open in front of goal.
After a sloppy clearance from City keeper Christian Bear, which went straight to an opposition forward in the D, Wimborne pulled a goal back to reduce the visitors deficit.
City fought back and went into half-time with a 3-1 lead thanks to a well taken goal from Martin King.
Wimborne pressed high in the second half, and put the home defence under pressure. City lost their shape, and some poor defending allowed the visitors to get back once more. The visitors continued to press and nearly found themselves level, however the goal was disallowed due to obstruction in the build up play.
City regrouped and after a King short corner hit the post, man of the match David Johns was first to react, and made no mistake in front of the open goal to frustrate Wimborne and extend City's lead.
Wimborne got another goal back late on, but City's defence held firm to close out the game and secure a much needed win which lifted them out of the relegation zone.
Injured captain Alan Ball said after the game: "That was a nervy game, and the team certainly put me through it as I watched them nearly throw it away. Fortunately they managed to hold on and got the much needed victory their efforts deserved."
