Citys women maintain promotion push
City of Portsmouth Women travelled to Gosport, and came 2-0 victors thanks to two goals from Katie Spooner.
The sun prevailed despite bad weather expectations and this set ambitions high. City pressed high in the first ten minutes of the first half and bagged their first goal after some hard pressed tracking from the forwards which lead to Lauren Stewart passing the ball through to Spooner who sent the ball into the back of the net on the reverse, 1-0.
The first half was end to end from there, lots of chances for either side to take but it wasn't to be. There was some great defending on display, and City managed to keep Gosport at bay.
City started the second half with good tempo, moving the ball around the pitch, thanks to quick passes from the defensive and midfield units. This enabled the forwards to carry the ball and put pressure on the Gosport defence, earning the first and only penalty corner of the game, which set up captain Spooner for her second goal of the day after another well worked penalty corner routine.
City continued to press until the final whistle but no shots came through, with the final score finishing 2-0.
Spooner said after the game: "Special thank you to Meri Westlake, Clare Boston, and Clemmie Bridges for helping us out today due to short numbers, you all had a cracking game. Feeling confident and promotion is still on!"
Man of the match was jointly awarded to Lauren Civil-Holt, Kate Green, and Clemmie Bridges for their work rates and composure on the ball.
