Title still in sight as City's women win again
City of Portsmouth women's 1's beat bottom of the table Winchester 3-0 at home in the wind and snow to stay within reach of the top of the table.
City pressed hard from the off and hassled Winchester from all angles, their defence held for some time until it finally broke and Becky Clay bagged her first goal with her new stick, just as it rolled over the line. The momentum was with City, and captain Katie Spooner managed to sink one in the corner after some great hassling from the forward and midfield unit.
The second half saw some flurries of defending but MOM's Emily Butcher and Emily Mackenzie held strong in defensive play and kept Winchester out. Many chances then came but City were unable to capitalise on them all until a great run from Lauren Stewart saw her whack the ball across the D for Becky Clay to smash it in on the back post, to seal a 3-0 win for the title chasing hosts.
Captain Katie Spooner said after the game: "Thank you again to Clare Boston, Clemmie Bridges for helping us out again. We are now six points away from the top of the league and six points clear of third. We have seven games left to smash up after the half term break."
