City maintain promotion push with 5-1 win
City of Portsmouth Women boosted their promotion chances with a comprehensive 5-1 win away to Andover.
The first 5 minutes were fairly open but then City stepped up their game and pressed hard. City had about 10 shots on goal before a great run around the D and a pass under the arm from Lauren Stewart to Katie Spooner on top D who netted the ball into the right corner of the goal to put city 1-0 up.
The goals slowly followed progressively after this with Becky Clay planting the second goal into net with a cheeky deflection.
In the second half Lauren Stewart bagged the next from a goal on the angle on the right hand side, and gave City a 3-0 advantage. City let their guard down for a short period and Andover took advantage to claim a consolation goal.
This spurred City on and Spooner bagged her second from a well worked short corner routine. Emily Butcher got the fifth and final goal from a cracking strike on top of the D.
Captain Spooner said after the game: "We welcomed Sarah Beaumont to the side today who recently joined the club and she had a great game and will be an asset to the team. Man of the match was awarded to Sarah Bamford for her great defending skills. We have a massive game next week against 3rd place Eastleigh, let's have it ladies!".
