City's women beat IOW in must win game
City of Portsmouth women won the first of two crucial games, with a convincing 5-2 win at home to the Isle of Wight.
City of Portsmouth had two games to play this weekend, and knew that four points were needed to secure promotion to Hampshire Division 1.
The ladies first game of the weekend was against the Isle of Wight at home on Saturday. City pressed hard from the off, with every single player knowing what was a stake. Isle of Wight took an early lead, however City soon equalised with a backboard finish from Emily Butcher. Becky Clay then followed in quick succession to make it 2-1.
After the half-time break, the hosts came out full throttle to take a three goal advantage with some great early balls that worked all the way through the team for Butcher and Clay to each net their second of the day. Isle of Wight managed to gain another goal at this point, but City showed quick play again which culminated in captain Katie Spooner whacking one home from the top of the D.
The City defence held strong with a flux of penalty corners from Isle of Wight, but City held them out to finish the game 5-2, and secure three of the required four points for promotion.
Man of the match was awarded to Emily Mackenzie for some great overloading from the back.
