CS denied by last kick of the match
Old Brentwood 15 CS Rugby 14
This was an eagerly awaited contest between two new boys to London Premier both having won their respective leagues last season and therefore with everything to play for. CS played up the considerable slop in the first half, and to their credit were soon playing at the home team’s end. On 10 minutes CS were awarded a penalty and opted for the kick at goal. Alas full back James Houstoun’s kick drifted narrowly wide. Brentwood opened their account on 25 minutes when their fly half put through an expertly weighted grubber kick for their centre to score 7 – 0. Brentwood then used a penalty to take play into the corner and via the line out the centres again scored 12-0. CS responded well to the setback and took play deep into Brentwood’s half where centre Ryan Martin sliced through to score from a half chance which Houstoun converted 12-7 was the half time score. Now with the slope CS started the second half very strongly. They all but scored but were pulled back for an infringement in the build up. However after 6 minutes of the second half back row Tom Williams forced his way over after good work by the forwards. Houstoun neatly converted from the left wing 14 – 12. Instead of continuing to use the slop CS now conceded a number of needless penalties, which together with some poor decision making, particularly at line out time helped Brentwood push for victory. After several penalties Brentwood were exerting pressure and with nearly 90 minutes on the clock CS thought they had won a penalty but the referee awarded it to Brentwood. The kick in front of the posts was converted and the match finished 15-14. Players to note were Brentwood’s fly half and CS’s second row Joe Goddard who was imperious at no 2 in the line out. Next week CS are at home (at Rosslyn Park kick off 17.30 against Sutton and Epsom who won yesterday 49-25.
