Clanfield lose in the last minute against Shortwood

A last gasp winner from Shortwood United consigned Clanfield to their fifth defeat in six matches on Saturday.

Shortwood went into the match having only won once in their seven matches so far but managed to double their points tally and move off the bottom of the table.

Mike Hedges returned in goal for the Robins after his suspension, with a back four of Ollie Hawkins, Callum Miller, Adam Smith and Aaron Paparoki ahead of him.

Jack Ellis was given his first league start of the season and played ahead of Adam Pendle and Steve Olphert in the midfield three.

Rob Hoskin and James Fleming were employed in wide positions supporting Mike Solan upfront.

The first half was played in torrential rain but Clanfield adapted to the conditions immediately as they went 1-0 up inside the first few minutes. Hoskin picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and slide through Ellis who had made a great forward run. The midfielder smashed the ball first time which squirmed underneath the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

However, Shortwood were back on level terms immediately when Hawkins made a hash of a back pass allowing the striker to take the ball off him before rounding Hedges and tapping the ball in.

Ellis had an almost identical chance to the one he finished earlier after being put through by Hoskin again but he attempted to chip the goalkeeper which was easily saved.

Solan almost got his first goal of the season after a great header from the edge of the box skimmed just wide. Olphert then put an effort wide from the edge of the box in the last action of the first half.

Clanfield didn't start the second half like the first and went 2-1 five minutes after the break when Smith lost possession in his own box and a scuffed effort from the Shortwood striker went in off the post.

Hoskin, who picked up a groin injury in the first half, was replaced by Matt Cheetham and Ellis, who had switched with Fleming to play on the left, was brought off for Mark Norridge and Clanfield shuffled their pack.

Clanfield were pushing for an equaliser and got their reward with 15 minutes remaining when a long free kick fell for Olphert who made no mistake with his left foot.

But it was Olphert's last action as he got injured minutes later and was replaced by player/coach Jamie Butt.

The match appeared to be heading for a draw until a long goal-kick from Shortwood found their striker. With no-one closing him down, he struck the ball across Hedges into the corner to claim his hat-trick and give his side all three points.

It was a disappointing afternoon all round for Clanfield with a defeat and a few injuries.
