Clanfield narrowly lose 2-1 to Tuffley Rovers

Clanfield were consigned to their second successive loss after a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Tuffley Rovers.

There were a couple of enforced changes from last week's 2-0 defeat to Purton with former goalkeeper Chris Brain filling in for the missing Mike Hedges. Kyle Moulden was unavailable so Benji Williams, who passed a late fitness test, played left-back. Adam Smith and Adam Pendle both returned at right-back and centre-midfield respectively while Jamie MacDonogh made his debut on the left side on a front three.

The Robins began the game well but failed to make the opposition goalkeeper work during the opening 20 minutes. Tuffley could have taken the lead after 25 minutes but a goal bound effort was blocked on the line by their own striker and danger was somehow averted.

The biggest talking point of the match occurred after 30 minutes when a brilliant kick from Chris Brain released Rob Hoskin through the middle before he was hauled down 20 yards out from goal by the last man. The referee gave the free-kick but only brandished a yellow card when, by the letter of the law, it should have been a red.

Clanfield couldn't take advantage of the free-kick and Tuffley soon went ahead against the run of play. A pull-back cross from the left was instantly controlled and volleyed home by the striker to give the home side a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Clanfield came close to equalising after half-time when Hoskin brought the ball down and his left-footed half-volley from 12 yards was brilliantly tipped round the post by the goalkeeper.

The home side went 2-0 up halfway through the second half when Callum Miller's pass was intercepted and Tuffley punished the centre-back after low cross was put away by the striker.

The second goal seemed to kill the game but with 10 minutes remaining Adam Pendle gave Clanfield a lifeline. He brought down a long ball and with his back to goal, produced a back heel from six yards which trickled into the corner of the net.

Clanfield pushed for an equaliser in the final few minutes but were unable to create any opportunity's as the home side held on for the three points.
