Chalgrove Cavaliers 5 v 3 Clanfield 85

Clanfield 85 failed to heed the warnings given by the same Opponents at the same stage last season and went out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup at the first attempt. Last season the Robins just got through after going behind but this time there was no reprieve. With a number of regulars missing this was always going to be a difficult afternoon for the Visitors and so it proved.

Clanfield went behind in the very first minute when goalkeeper Jamie Zoldan's attempted clearance was charged down and rebounded in to the net. They should have been level in the 9th minute but Zac Oliver shot over from close range after Callum Millers low cross. The equaliser came after 14 minutes when a free kick by Jack Payne was guided home by Karl Roberts.Payne was in the action again in the 28th minute when he was harshly adjudged to have fouled a Chalgrove striker in the penalty area and the home side duly converted the spot kick.It looked a very soft award on the say so of the Assistant Referee. The same official played a part in the third Chalgrove goal in the 42nd minute when with the Visitors claiming offside Chalgrove did not wait for the whistle and made it 3-1.Callum Miller pulled a goal back a minute later to make the halftime score 3-2.

Clanfield created numerous chances in the first twenty minutes of the Second Half but a combination of poor finishing, near misses and good defending saw the frustrations begin to grow and it came as no surprise when Chalgrove made it 4-2 in the 68th minute and the Robins fate was sealed in the 80th minute when they made it 5-2. Clanfield continued to create and miss chances and Zac Olivers goal in stoppage time was too little too late.On the day Clanfield did not deserve to win with their failure to convert their chances costing them dear but take nothing away from Chalgrove. They gave their Visitors a lesson in taking chances and defended well..Hopefully Clanfield will take heed of that lesson.
