Clanfield rue missed chances as they are held to a draw.

Clanfield were left to rue missed chances as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Shortwood United.

The Robins were the better team during the 90 minutes, especially during a one-sided second half, but couldn't covert the chances that came their way despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to play.

On a positive note, it was Clanfield's third clean sheet in four matches as the back five of goalkeeper Mike Hedges and defenders Mark Norridge, Callum Miller, Adam Smith and Aaron Paparoki were rarely troubled by the opposition.

New club captain Adam Pendle was joined by Matt Cheetham and Jack Ellis in midfield while Rob Hoskin and Benji Williams were either side of Mike Solan up-front.

The first half was a tight affair with very few chances for both sides. Clanfield were playing with the wind but couldn't take advantage of it as they didn't trouble the Shortwood goalkeeper.

Meanwhile at the other end Shortwood striker Craig Mills, who scored a hat-trick against the Robins two weeks ago, was being kept quiet by Smith and Miller.

At half-time manager Peter Osbourne decided to tweak the formation reverting to a 4-4-2 with Williams and Ellis on the wings and Hoskin joining Solan up-front.

The formation allowed the home side to take control of the second half with Solan being less isolated and Ellis and Williams getting down the flanks to push back the Shortwood full-backs.

It was one-way traffic at the start of the second period with Solan having the first good chance as Ellis beat his man down the left but Solan could only hit the side-netting with the pull-back.

Solan went close again shortly afterwards when he diverted a Pendle header from a corner onto the crossbar and Hoskin couldn't convert the rebound.

Hoskin then had a carbon-copy chance, again from a Pendle header from a corner, but he could only flick his header over from underneath the crossbar.

Ellis was next to have a strike on goal when Hoskin nodded the ball down for him but his effort was blocked before Hoskin's shot was saved by the 'keeper.

A blatant foul by Shortwood's left-back when Ellis attempted to go round him earnt him a second yellow card meaning Clanfield faced the remaining 15 minutes against 10 men.

But despite dominating, they couldn't quite find the goal that would have won the match with substitute Ollie Hawkins going closest late on when his 20 yard effort was tipped wide.

The result represented Clanfield's first draw of the season but they could consider themselves unfortunate not to have been rewarded with all three points.
