Cleethorpes 17 Grimsby 27
Grimsby made the short journey across North East Lincolnshire to visit the resort’s team. It was a fantastic day for running rugby and the supporters were treated to a spectacle of good, competitive game.
Grimsby started strongly and were over the tryline to score within the first few minutes. The signs were not good for the Meggies. However, Cleethorpes started to win possession and the ball found its way to the Clee backs. Liam Williams
at centre started to show strong running. This in turn encouraged the forwards of Cleethorpes. Josh Nutting was impressive as prop and quickly showed his strength and power.
Cleethorpes almost equalised but had the ball held up in the Grimsby try zone. Grimsby went on to push up field and towards the middle of the first half scored again and converted to make the score 0-12 in the visitors favour.
But Cleethorpes were playing well. Flankers Peter Horobin and Drew Trigg
covered ground and made the crucial tackles. Much to the delight of the Meggies supporters, Liam Williams
broke through the centre and went on to score to make the score 5-12.
Grimsby kept their heads and squeezed in their third try just before half-time.
The second half saw Cleethorpes score another try because of good driving rugby. Liam Williams
capitalised on this to forge his way through the centre and pull off another try. This was converted by Jamie Bottomley
. Liam ran in a further try but Grimsby ran in to tow more.
A great game and Cleethorpes look forward to playing Grimsby again next season.
