Last gasp stunning strike earns vital win for Owls

A last gasp stunning striker from leading scorer Marc Cooper saw Marcus Newell’s side come from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Thackley AFC on Saturday.

The Owls were 2-0 going into the second half but a fantastic fight back with goals from Caine Winfarrah, Daniel Trott and Cooper saw the Owls leave Bradford with all three points.

Newell made four changes from Wednesdays comprehensive 5-2 win over Maltby Main with Matthew Kingston, Tim Lowe, Jack Richardson and Jonathan Oglesby all recalled to the starting line up.

The Owls made a strong start to the game with Thackley immediately on the back foot but left back Peter Winn could not find the target in the opening minute as he shot over the bar.

Just a minute later Oglesby went close as his left footed driver went narrowly the wrong side of the post.

Completely against the run of play though Thackley scored. A swift throw out by Tom Metcalfe found its was to Rincon who managed to jink his way past his marker and find a pinpoint cross for Ben Beckles to nod home from 8 yards past the helpless Miles Fenty.

Cleethorpes then began to dominate from the restart with Trott having a great chance to equalise in the ninth minute but Paul White denied him with a great last-ditch challenge just outside the area.

Moments later Oglesby saw a corner punched clear by Metcalfe only to find Winn but could not find the target with the keeper flaying.

Even closer the Owls came in the 16th minute as the woodwork took the brunt of a sting Luke Mascall shot which rebounded off the post much to his annoyance after a fantastically worked move.

Alex Flett, then Cooper saw shots well saved by Metcalfe who was having a brilliant game keeping out the Owls attacks.

Further and further forward they pushed looking for an equaliser but Winn, Trott and Oglesby all could not break the stern Thackley defence who looked in no mood to concede.

Then, just as the referee was about to blow for half time, Thackley extended their lead. Rincon once again was the provider and Beckles once more scored a decisive goal slotting the ball home with precision in one of only two clear-cut chances for the hosts in the first half.

Newell made a change at the break bringing on former Grimsby Town winger Caine Winfarrah for Kingston.

It almost had an immediate impact but at the wrong end as Thackley calved open the Owls defence inside 20 seconds as Littlefair broke free on the wing to cross for Bentham but he side footed the ball over Fenty’s bar and into the car park behind the goal.

Metcalfe was once again tested but from range twice in two minutes. Firstly from Flett, then Oglesby went close but the keeper was having the better of it in the opening few minutes of the half.

Just 8 minutes later though in the 57th minute, the Owls pulled a goal back through substitute Winfarrah as he coolly knocked home a long cross home at the back post.

The comeback was on for the Owls and immediately went on the offensive and soon equalised as Daniel Trott smashed the ball past Metcalfe after Oglesby’s initial shot was blocked.

This was not enough for the Owls as they now had the momentum but Thackley once again held resolute during the next fifteen minutes as Trott was denied his second of the game after the keeper spilt his shot but managed to reclaim the ball just in the nick of time.

Then Lowe came close twice in as many minutes but found Metcalfe in fine form. Going into the last five minutes of the game it looked like there was going to be only one winner looking at the balance of player but the Owls had to ride one more scare as Hargreaves shot from 12 yards out follow a weak Fenty punch was smashed against the right hand post and pinged out of play.

Just as the game looked like it was going to end as a draw, there was once more clinical piece of play. The ball fell to Cooper 16 yards out and he lashed the ball high into the roof of the net giving Metcalfe no chance sending the travelling fans into raptures.

The Owls are next in action on Saturday, were it is Non-League Day celebrating the love of football at grassroots level. Cleethorpes host Parkgate at the Bradley Community Stadium, with a 3:00pm kick-off.
