Cleethorpes Town will return from their trip to Bristol with the Toolstation Challenge Cup after edging a nine goal thriller against Willand Rovers.

Danny Trott bagged a hat trick and Marc Cooper netted the other two as the Toolstation Northern Counties East League representatives won by the odd goal in nine against Willand, who were representing the Toolstation Western League in the match which was played at the home ground of Bitton FC.

The match proved to be an excellent advert for non league football with some great goals and excellent attacking football by both sides.

It was Willand who settled quickest and Cleethorpes goalkeeper Miles Fenty produced a great stop after just two minutes to deny Tom Bath. The striker wasn't to be denied for long however as he fired home from a corner with just four minutes played to give his side the lead.

It should have been 2-0 moments later as Bath again caused problems before shooting narrowly wide. A snap shot from Willand's Lewis Tasker went just wide before Bath forced Fenty to produce another great stop after latching on to Taskers through ball. The match referee then waved away loud penalty appeals as Clee's Lawrence McKay challenged Marley Thomas in the box.

The Owls began to settle and equalised after 20 minutes with their first real chance of note. Trott bundled the ball home from close range after an excellent cross by McKay. Things got even better just two minutes later as Marc Cooper side footed the ball past Willand goalkeeperJosh Haywood after finding himself unmarked in the area.

The lead didn't last long as Willand equalised almost immediately. Striker James Blake beat the Owls offisde trap before clinically shooting past Fenty.

The match flowed from end to end with Cleethorpes Liam Dickens heading just over from Caine Winfarrah's pinpoint cross before Winfarrah himself was denied by Haywood. At the opposite end a long range effort from Tasker flew just wide before Fenty made another impressive stop to deny Tasker.

Trott then grabbed his second of the match to restore Cleethorpes' lead, the striker smashing home after an excellent through ball from Brody Robertson.

Any worries that the second half would be less entertaining than the first were quickly dispelled as Trott completed his hat trick, chasing onto a long ball before firing home. The Owls moved three goals ahead as Cooper netted his second of the match with a close range header.

With half an hour still to play Willand could easily have wilted but to their credit they instead came roaring back into contention with two goals in seven minutes. Bath reduced the deficit, knocking home at the far post before completing his hat trick with 23 minutes still to play, finishing off a well worked move.

Chances continued to come at both ends with Owls skipper Darren Hanslip blazing over and Robertson rounding the goalkeeper but missing the target from a tight angle. Alex Flett then saved Cleethorpes, clearing off the line from Blakes' effort before the same player headed narrowly over the bar.

The final chance of the match came in the fifth minute of injury time as Tasker had a dangerous looking free kick for Willand. To the Owls relief he fired his effort way over the bar and into the trees.

Moments later and the full time whistle blew, leaving Hanslip to step up and collect the trophy for the victorious Cleethorpes side.

Everyone at Cleethorpes Town would like to thank Bitton FC for their hospitality and Toolstation and the NCEL for inviting the Owls to represent them. Best wishes for the season ahead go to Willand Rovers.

Cleethorpes have one more pre season friendly remaining before their league campaign kicks off in two weeks. Boston Town will visit the Linden Homes Club on Saturday 1st August. Kick off will be at 3pm.
