A Look Ahead To The Owls 1st Season In The NCEL Premier Division

Cleethorpes Town inaugural season in the Northern Counties Premier Division kicks off on Saturday 9th August when they travel to West Yorkshire to face Liversedge. They are veterans in the league, this being their 24th year in the league. The highest place they came was back in 2005/6 when they finished second, however they were not promoted on that occasion. Since then they have started to struggle with life in the NCEL top flight and last season they finished 20th, having only accumulated 36 points from 44 games. In the league they did finish on a 6 match-losing streak, however they have won all their pre-season friendlies to date which will only increase their confidence going into the new season.

Just 4 days later, the first home match of the season for the Owls takes place at the Bradley Community Stadium. Albion Sports are the visitors, having spent just 1 season so far in the Premier after winning Division 1 in 2012/13. They finished 6th in their 1st season in the Premier Division, finishing just 21 points from 1st place. The two sides have met on 2 previous occasions, Albion winning 4-0 in September 2012 and then a 1-1 draw in March 2013.

Only 3 days after, the Owls play in the there first ever FA Cup match, which is against Borrowash Victoria. The Derbyshire side, which ply their trade in East Midlands Counties League travel to the seaside in hope of FA Cup success.

League action returns to Bradley the following Wednesday when the ‘Owls host Parkgate. A side who started well when they where promoted in 2006/7, but who have tailed away in the last couple of season. They will be looking at getting some early points on the board after failing to break the 40-point barrier in the last campaign.

The Owls 2nd away day arrives late in August after a weekend free of football as they travel make the 68-mile journey west to Worksop. They are the fourth oldest club in the world and were founded in 1857. The club has a long history and will be looking at doing well in there first season in the NCEL Premier Division.

September starts by hosting Loughbrough University at home in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round. This will be the 2nd year in the competition for the Owls, after bowing out last year at the 2nd Qualifying Round to Morpeth Town.

The cup competitions keep on coming when 4 days later we host yet another game at Bradley when Pensitone Church or Teversal visit in the NCEL League Cup. The Owls exited last year’s competition in mid-December thanks to 2 last minute goals by Eccleshill which saw them lose 2-1.

Two consecutive away games then follow, traveling 1st to Retford United, then Athersley Recreation who finished 9th and 10th respectively in their last campaigns. The Owls must be careful as both sides have good home records, 50% and 41% home win success rate for 2013/14.

Following this, the action returns home as the Owls face Heanor Town. The Derbyshire based side only returned to the NCEL Premier Division in 2012 and boast some impressive players who have progressed from the club, including Nigel Clough, Peter Dolby and Nigel Pearson to name three.

The Owls then finish off September by travelling to Bridlington Town. The Seasider's, who in recent years have done very well in the NCEL Premier Division, sadly failed to live up to the previous 4 season having finished 12th last campaign compare to 1st, 3rd, 2nd and 3rd from 2009-2012. On a brighter note, they do boast the 15th best programme in the Non-League football pyramid.

October kicks off when the Owls host Pickering Town. The North Yorkshire based side has played in the NCEL for 42 years and are well accustomed to life in the league. Having finished 7th last season, they will be a tough test for the Owls.

Nostell Miners Welfare are trip away for the Owls then its 2 games in the space of 68 hours when they host Garforth Town then Glasshoughton Welfare on the Saturday. With 3 games in a week, it will be a tough test for the Owls as they face 3 sides that have a long history in the league despite all 3 finishing in the bottom half of the table last season.

October finishes with an away trip to Thackley then a home tie with fellow promoted Shaw Lane Aquaforce. The Owls have never faced Thackley, however Shaw Lane were beaten in the same fixture 3-0 last season, whilst they held the Owls to a 1-1 draw late in the season away from home.

November starts and finishes with a home tie. Firstly they welcome Barton Town Old Boys to Bradley, and then go on the road to Hansworth Parramore a week later. Then return back home to face Maltby Main, then onto Tadcaster Albion in a tough trip away from home. The month is rounded up with Staveley Miners Welfare visiting the home of the Owls.

December sees 2 home and 2 away days. The first being Pickering Town away from home, then Athersley Recreation at home. The month is finished with a trip to Garforth Town then hosting Armthorpe Welfare rounds off the year.

The return affair with Armthorpe Welfare comes just 7 days later as the New Year is welcome by making the short trip to Doncaster to face the NCEL veterans. Then the Owls play Liversedge at home, followed by Albion Sports away then Worksop at Home.

The remaining of the season sees every Saturday being filled by a fixtures and alternation between home and away. February sees Parkgate (A), Retford (H), Heanor (A), Bridlington (H). March is Shaw Lane (A), Nostell (H), Glasshoughton (A), Thackley (H). April is Barton (A), Handsworth (H), Maltby (A), Tadcaster (H).

Finally, the last game of the season sees the Owls travel to Staveley Miners Welfare in Chesterfield on the 2nd May 2015. The 73-mile journey will be the last game and away trip of a long season for the Owls, which we can only hope, will be a successful one.

The Owls play their home matches from the Bradley Community Stadium, Bradley Road, Grimsby, DN37 0AG.
