Cleethorpes Town (U18) 4 Brigg Town (U18) 5 Sunday 8th April
U18’s Slip up to Leave Title in the Balance
Cleethorpes Town (U18) kicked off knowing a win would bring them the league title; but it was Brigg who seemed to have a greater appetite to win to begin with and after 22 minutes they were already two – nil up.
Cleethorpes looked dangerous breaking forward on numerous occasions but couldn’t make it pay. They did get a goal back before half time however, when a ball was played back to the edge of the penalty area for Adam McVeigh to find the bottom corner of the net.
Within two minutes of the second half starting Clee were awarded a penalty which was dispatched by Jack Clifton, putting them right back in it. However they were behind again seven minutes later, when a Brigg free- kick just outside the box found its way past the Clee defensive wall into the net.
Substitutions saw Benji Smith and Jordan Boyington introduced for Clee. This also allowed Adam Mc Veigh to switch from the centre, to his more natural role on the right of midfield. The changes paid dividends as first Benji Smith scored with a great strike from the left edge of the penalty area; then Adam McVeigh completed a surging run down the right, by smashing the ball across the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net.
So Clee Town finally found themselves ahead with 17 minutes left. However the win they needed didn’t come. Firstly on 77 minutes they conceded from a long distance strike to make it four a piece. Clee were pushing on for the win and almost got a goal from a short corner that caused a chaotic scramble in the 6yard box. However in committing players forward Clee were caught on the break; having got free on the left just outside the penalty area, a Brigg player found the net with only 2 minutes left.
So, Clee Town missed their opportunity to win the league and now leave themselves a must win game against Retford United next Sunday. The Man of the Match went Adam Mc Veigh for his two goals and great work rate.
