Cleevillians stretch their lead following success in a top of the table clash.
This week saw first against second pitted against each other in the Severn division.
Cleevillians hoped to extend their league at the top to 5 points against Cardiff & UWIC C. Both teams had enjoyed solid starts to the season making this game all the more important.
Cleevillians knew a tough game was in store and Cardiff & UWIC C did not disappoint. They started on the front foot with composed passing at pace. Cleevillians however weathered the early storm. Cleevillians were organised and managed to limit them to half chances. Cardiff & UWIC C eventually managed to force a couple of short corners that became nothing with shots easily dealt with by Chris Smallwood in goal.
With the exception of Aberystwyth most games have provided Cleevillians with space and time on the ball and it was clear that this was not going to be available on this occasion. One weapon Cleevillians do have in their armoury is the ability to attach with pace. After the early pressure Cleevillians showed this with a break that happen with the blink of an eye.
Cardiff & UWIC C continued to enjoy large amounts of the possession; however Cleevillians remained stubborn in defence and used their pace to great effect to earn a short corner. A well drilled corner fell to Simon Trower who, on the second time of asking reacted and stabbed in the opening goal.
The game started to expand after the goal with Cardiff & UWIC C chasing an equaliser. Space became more apparent and Cleevillians enjoyed more of the ball and started to create a few chances. Once again, Cardiff & UWIC C were punished from a short corner. The short corner routine went as planned, however the keeper saved the short but it wasn’t cleared. After a scrap in the D KP ceased the opportunity to divert it in once again after a couple of attempts were somehow kept out.
Cardiff & UWIC C took a leaf out of Cleevillians book and managed to pull a goal back before half time by catching Cleevillians on the break. After working the ball down the right, they eventually got the ball into the D where a good finish on the turn made it 2-1.
The second half continued in similar a similar pattern, with the last part of the half being all Cardiff & UWIC C. Cleevillians remained resolute in defence and managed to pass one of their toughest tests yet.
