CLEVEDON TOWN 5 SHERBORNE TOWN 0
(THE FA CUP WITH BUDWEISER – FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND 25/08/12)
Clevedon Town returned to FA Cup action against Sherborne Town looking to build on recent league results and continue their winning run in this season's FA Cup. The international weekend had helped to boost the crowd and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and in particular the dominant way that Clevedon played the whole match and ran out comfortable winners. The game started in frantic fashion with the away side trying to dominate and pull off a shock cup upset.
The home side quickly got into their stride and had the first chance of the match on nine minutes when a lovely through ball from Adie Adams found Adam Mahdi, unfortunately his delicate chip over the keeper was just wide of the far post. Three minutes later Mahdi this time brought a terrific save from Marc Locke in the visitors’ goal and the rebound fell to Scott Murray
and he surprisingly steered a simple headed effort just wide of the post.
The next period of the game saw the home side creating more and more chances leaving Sherborne Town in some disarray. The opening goal came after eighteen minutes when a beautiful run and accurate pass by Jack McKenna ended with the ball threaded to Adie Adams who side footed the ball in to the net. Four minutes later Bawan Hussain had a skilful run down the right, his pass inside to Adam Mahdi produced a thirty yard shot which went just wide and shortly after a very slick passing move saw Hussain break clear only to float an excellent effort past the keeper and the post.
The second goal for Clevedon came on forty four minutes when yet another run down the right by Hussain resulted in a long cross field pass to Scott Murray
who put the ball back across the goal in to the bottom corner from an acute angle.
Half Time: Clevedon Town 2 Sherborne Town 0
Clevedon Town came out for the second half determined to tie up the result and within four minutes of the restart they were 3-0 ahead when McKenna brilliantly found Scott Murray
who rounded Locke in the visitors goal and slotted in to an empty net. Ten minutes later a solo effort from Murray saw him work the ball down the left flank and his final goal bound shot took a deflection from Darren Rowe to leave the keeper wrong footed and to complete a fantastic hat-trick for Scott. Again in the sixty seventh minute McKenna and Murray combined when the former slid an inch perfect pass through the defence and the latter placed a beautiful chip over the advancing Locke and the ball went in off the far post making his tally this season 6 goals in 3 matches.
almost made it six (and his fifth) in the eighty eighth minute when his thunderbolt free kick from thirty yards shaved the near post. The last word of the game fell to Sherborne on one of their rare ventures in to the Clevedon area when a sharp shot from Matt Day brought a wonderful finger tip save from Matthews in the home goal.
