NORTH LEIGH 3 CLEVEDON TOWN 0
(EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION 1 SOUTH & WEST 18/10/11)

Clevedon Town travelled to Oxfordshire to play North Leigh and were well beaten 3-0 by a team that were reduced to 10 men after 35 minutes.

On a chilly autumn evening it was the home team, playing up the considerable slope, which had the better of the early exchanges, testing the visitors’ defence with a couple of dangerous crosses. On 7 minutes Chas Hemmings played a lovely through ball to Reeko Best but he skewed his shot wide of the target. Clevedon failed to heed the early aerial threats from their opponents and went one down on 15 minutes when a cross from the left was headed home by unmarked captain Stuart Hole. On 20 minutes Elliott Osbourne-Ricketts hit a 20-yard screamer that clipped the top of Clevedon’s bar as the home side continued to press for a second goal. Clevedon replied on the break with a looping shot from Ashley Kington that was too high to trouble the keeper. On 35 minutes Clevedon were handed a lifeline as North Leigh were reduced to ten men when Kieran Sanders was shown a straight red card for an over-the-top tackle on Lloyd Mills. But this did little to change the course of the match and the home side finished the half still well on top as Tom Franklin lashed a free kick narrowly wide.

The Seasiders made a better start to the second period and went close when Steve Kingdon met a George Brimson corner but put his header straight at custodian Sam Warrell. Minutes later Clevedon’s best passing move of the game ended with debutante Jack McKenna shooting wide of the target. McKenna then turned provider as his floated cross was headed goalwards by Hemmings but Warrell got down well to save. That was as good as it got for The Seasiders as North Leigh regained control and made light of their one man shortage. On 63 minutes a deep free kick into Clevedon’s box was headed into the far corner of the net by Franklin. Then 10 minutes later it became 3-0 as the home side launched another swift and incisive attack which ended with Brian Bowles shooting past Dawid Dulawa to put the game out of reach of a Clevedon side that never really got to grips with the pace of the game.
