Radstock Town Under 18s (1) v Clevedon Town Under 18s (5) - Roger Stone Memorial Cup Final - Match Report
By Tony Merrett assisted by Eric Howe
The Clevedon Town Under 18s travelled to Weston-super-Mare’s Woodspring Stadium to take on their counterparts from Radstock Town in the Final of the Roger Stone Memorial Cup. After a cagey first 80 minutes the game finally sprang into life in the last 10 minutes when both teams scored to send the game into extra time with the Clevedon youngsters finally proving too strong and scoring a further 4 goals to run out worthy winners.
The first action on 7 minutes saw Clevedon captain Ryan Gissing trying a long range shot which was easily held by Charlie Phillips in the Radstock goal.
In the 16th minute Sam Downe went on a run down the left before cutting into the box and seeing his shot saved by Charlie Phillips.
Radstock’s danger-man Kalem Marsh went on a mazy run down the right on 23 minutes before cutting into the box and was just about to unleash a shot when Man of the Match James Robinson threw himself in the way to block the shot and clear the danger.
Clevedon went close in the 28th minute when Lucas Vowles played the ball into strike-partner Fraser Linnitt who turned and saw his shot deflected onto the outside of the post and away for a corner.
On 36 minutes an Archie Ferris throw found Fraser Linnitt who laid the ball off for Lucas Vowles to shoot over.
In the 39th minute Radstock’s Kalem Marsh cut in from the right and made space for himself to shoot but Will Bennett was well placed to easily save the shot and 4 minutes later the same player tried his luck again after a long ball from the back put him clear but the Clevedon keeper was equal to the challenge and saved again.

Clevedon started the second half in determined mood and on 47 minutes Lucas Vowles collected the ball before running into the box and shooting wide.
On 48 minutes Ryan Gissing won the ball in midfield and tried his luck from 20 yards but the shot was saved by Charlie Phillips.
Clevedon went close again in the 55th minute when a Fraser Linnitt run into the box saw the ball laid back for Morgan Davies whose chipped shot hit the top of the bar.
On 58 minutes a Tyler Ashmead throw found Lucas Vowles on the right and he managed to jink his way past several Radstock players and into the box before seeing his shot saved by Charlie Phillips.
As the game wore on both teams started to make mistakes and Clevedon were gifted a great opportunity in the 75th minute when Radstock’s Corey Thomas gave the ball away to Fraser Linnitt whose run into the box saw his shot saved by Charlie Phillips.
Unfortunately Clevedon’s error on 79 minutes resulted in Radstock taking the lead. There appeared little danger as the ball was played along the Clevedon backline but a misplaced pass saw Radstock skipper Morgan Skipp presented with the ball and he found Kalem Marsh whose shot into the right corner of the net saw Will Bennett get his fingertips to the ball but he was unable to prevent it rolling into the net to make the score 1-0 to Radstock.
Clevedon heads didn’t drop and they immediately went in search of the equaliser. In the 81st minute a run by Alex Camm saw the ball squared to Ryan Gissing on the penalty spot and his shot produced a point-blank save from Charlie Phillips with the ball rebounding to Ryan whose header went over the bar.
Clevedon did find the equaliser on 85 minutes. A quick throw down the right from Tyler Ashmead found Morgan Davies and he played the ball to Lucas Vowles who cut into the box and chipped the ball over the advancing Charlie Phillips and then watched agonisingly as the ball ran the right side of the post to nestle in the corner of the net and make the score 1-1.
Clevedon pushed forward looking to win the game in normal time and in the 87th minute a long ball down the left found Lucas Vowles who played in substitute Alex Crofts but his shot was saved by Charlie Phillips.
There being no further goals the game then went into 30 minutes extra time.

Clevedon nearly made the worst possible start to the first period of extra time when they conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box after 2 minutes. Radstock skipper Morgan Skipp stepped up and curled the ball around the wall but to the relief of the Clevedon supporters the ball hit the outside of the post and went behind for a goal-kick.
Clevedon went straight down the other end and took the lead in the 3rd minute. A long ball into the box was cleared to Archie Ferris who deftly placed a lovely left-foot chip over the stranded Charlie Phillips and into the net to make the score 2-1 to Clevedon.
Radstock nearly equalised on 11 minutes when a shot from Rico Sobers saw Will Bennett dive and save the ball at full stretch.
First Half Extra Time: Radstock town Under 18s 1 Clevedon Town Under 18s 2
Clevedon went further ahead in the 19th minute when an Alex Camm run into the box saw him fouled by Corey Thomas but the Clevedon man attempted to play on but when he was fouled for a second time the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Alex took responsibility himself and calmly sent Charlie Phillips the wrong way to make the score 3-1 and show those First Team players watching how a penalty should be taken after they had missed the last 2 penalties they had been awarded.
Clevedon went further ahead in very bizarre fashion. Radstock won a corner on 23 minutes and keeper Charlie Phillips decided to go forward. The ball was cleared to Alex Camm on the half-way line and he took aim and saw his shot just outpace the chasing defenders to trickle over the line and into the net to make the score 4-1.
On 25 minutes Alex Camm had a chance to complete his hat-trick but unfortunately he couldn’t direct his shot on target when well placed and the ball flew wide.
Clevedon completed the scoring in the 27th minute when a run down the left by Alex Camm saw the ball played to Alex Crofts who beat Charlie Phillips with a low shot at his near post to make the final score 5-1.
The final whistle soon followed and the Clevedon youngsters were able to celebrate a thoroughly deserved victory.
