Clevedon Town Under 18s (1) v Weston-super-Mare Under 18s (2) - Match Report
By Tony Merrett assisted by Eric Howe
In front of the largest crowd seen at The Everyone Active Stadium for a number of years Clevedon Town Under 18s took on their rivals from Weston-super-Mare with the destiny of the Somerset Floodlight Youth League Premier Division title on the line. Unfortunately for the Clevedon youngsters they lost to a goal scored in the 3rd minute of injury time to see the title go to the visitors from down the M5.
Clevedon could have taken the lead in the 4th minute when they were awarded a free-kick near the centre circle. Captain Ryan Gissing floated the ball to the back post where Archie Ferris got above his marker to send a looping header wide of Weston keeper Andrew Head but then see it hit the base of the upright and rebound to safety.
On 6 minutes a powerful run down the right by Tyler Ashmead saw his shot deflected behind for a corner.
Weston created their first opportunity in the 15th minute when a free-kick by Elliot Nicholson was blocked and the ball fell to Jamie Irwin whose shot was well saved by Will Bennett.
On 24 minutes Alex Camm won the ball in midfield before playing in Lucas Vowles whose shot was well saved by Andrew Head.
Clevedon’s midfielders were working hard in closing down their Weston counterparts and one such occasion in the 28th minute saw Morgan Davies win the ball back and play a lovely pass through to Lucas Vowles on the left edge of the penalty area. Lucas squared the ball to fellow striker Fraser Linnitt who tried to allow the ball to run across his body so that he could side-foot the ball home with his right foot and the slight delay was enough for Aiden Jones to block the shot.
On 31 minutes Tyler Ashmead won the ball before passing to Fraser Linnitt whose shot went wide.
Weston were awarded a free-kick in the 33rd minute and leading scorer Sol Wanjau-Smith curled the ball over the wall but unfortunately for him it hit the top of the crossbar and not the back of the net.
Weston went close again on 38 minutes when a quick break down the right saw Tom Llewellyn cross the ball to the far post where the unmarked Jamie Irwin placed his header wide when he should have done better.
The last significant action of the first half in the 43rd minute saw Clevedon win a corner which was headed goal-ward by Alex Camm and pushed away by Andrew Head but Fraser Linnitt was just unable to get to the loose ball before the defender and the ball was cleared.
Half Time: Clevedon Town Under 18s 0 Weston-super-Mare Under 18s 0
On 57 minutes a free-kick from the left by Morgan Davies found James Robinson at the far post but he could only direct his header straight into the arms of Andrew Head.
In the 61st minute a run down the left by Sam Downe saw the ball played inside to fellow substitute Alex Crofts who shot straight at Andrew Head.
Weston won a free-kick just outside the box on 65 minutes which Sol Wanjau-Smith curled around the wall and with the ball heading inside the far post Will Bennett did extremely well to dive and push the ball around the post.
In the 67th minute a cross from the left found skipper George Morris-Edwards at the far post who headed the ball back into the middle where Aiden Jones headed over the bar.
Clevedon took the lead on 72 minutes. A corner from the right by Morgan Davies found Alex Camm whose header was pushed away by Andrew Head with the ball falling to Archie Ferris who hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the net to make the score 1-0.
The game turned in the 82nd minute when a long ball was played forward for Jamie Irwin to run into the Clevedon box and collide with keeper Will Bennett who had rushed off his line. The referee pointed to the spot and Jamie Irwin confidently beat Will Bennett to make the score 1-1.
The game appeared to turn again when Weston’s Tom Frampton picked up his second yellow card and was sent off on 86 minutes.
Clevedon tried to make their numerical advantage count but it was the visitors who looked dangerous on the break and in the first minute of stoppage time one such break saw Tom Llewellyn’s run stopped on the edge of the box. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and in the aftermath Clevedon’s Tyler Ashmead was shown a straight red card for suggesting to the referee that he had got it wrong and the foul had occurred outside the box. Ironically once Tyler had left the field the referee consulted his Assistant who confirmed that the offence had indeed occurred outside the box and he changed his decision to a free-kick but too late to save Tyler. The free-kick saw Will Bennett make a Man of the Match save by pushing the ball around the post for a corner. Unfortunately for Clevedon there was nothing that he could do from the subsequent corner when the ball fell to substitute Archie Lye who headed the ball into the net to make the final score 1-2 and see Weston celebrating having clinched the Somerset Floodlight Youth League Premier Division title.
