Clevedon got the new season off to the best possible start with a win over neighbours Ashton & Backwell United in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.

It was the visitors who were quickly into their stride with Malick Jameh looking dangerous on the left wing. Good work from him on 5 minutes won a corner on the left which was swung into the box and headed over by Paul Uppington.

A minute later and Ashton & Backwell took the lead. More good work from Malick Jameh saw the ball crossed into Miles Hardidge and he guided the ball across Ben Gast and into the corner of the net to make the score 0-1.

Clevedon had a great chance to equalise in the 10th minute when a surging run from Joe Ellis saw him beat several defenders before passing to Isaac Reid who in turn played a lovely ball through for Daine O’Connor and with only Ashton keeper Lewis Coombes to beat Daine shot agonisingly wide of the near post.

On 20 minutes Clevedon forced 5 corners in a row. Alex Parrott swung some dangerous crosses into the box with the best chances falling to Abdi Gure who headed straight at Lewis Coombes from one before sending another header wide from the final one.

In the 25th minute Clevedon created another good opportunity when an Alex Parrott corner from the right found Joe Ellis who was prevented from shooting by the prone Abdi Gure so instead played a great ball across the goal-line with no Clevedon players on hand to put the ball in the net. The ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Kevin Camargo hit a thundering drive just wide of the post.

On 32 minutes an Ashton & Backwell cross from the left saw captain Sam Skidmore head over.

In the 34th minute Clevedon won another corner on the right which Alex Parrott again did well to pick out Abdi Gure in the box but unfortunately his header went wide.

On 40 minutes Ashton & Backwell broke down the left and crossed to Sam Skidmore who again headed over.

Half Time: Clevedon Town 0 Ashton & Backwell United 1

Ashton & Backwell again caused Clevedon problems at the start of the second period when they broke down the left straight from the restart and the ball was played across the goal-line before the home fans breathed a sigh of relief as the ball was cleared.

On 47 minutes a powerful run from Isaac Reid saw him shoot just wide.

In the 52nd minute Ashton & Backwell’s Joe Bishop played the ball through for Malick Jameh to force a good save from Ben Gast.

On 56 minutes a good cross from the right by Joe Ellis saw Isaac Reid’s glancing header cleared.

Clevedon started to apply more pressure and were rewarded with the equaliser in the 65th minute. A long ball from the back appeared too strong for Daine O’Connor but he put the defender under pressure and won the ball before cutting in from the left and placing the ball passed the advancing Lewis Coombes and into the corner of the net to make the score 1-1.

On 72 minutes Daine O’Connor was played through and tried to slip the ball passed Lewis Coombes who managed to stick out a hand and stop the ball.

In the 77th minute a corner from the left by Alex Parrott was headed wide by Abdi Gure.

Ashton & Backwell were looking to catch the home side on the break and on 78 minutes the ball was played through to Jake Flower but he could only blaze the ball over.

Clevedon then took the lead in the 79th minute. The ball was played down the right to substitute Saul Jarrett who played a great ball into the box for Daine O’Connor to head home and make the score 2-1.

There was still time for Ashton & Backwell to try to find an equaliser and they had a good opportunity on 85 minutes when a free-kick was played into the box for Ross Higginson to head over.

Clevedon were able to hold on until the final whistle and are now at home to Barnstaple Town on Saturday 20th August in the next round.

Clevedon are next in action on Saturday 13th August when they entertain Bridport at The Everyone Active Stadium with a 3:00 pm kick-off.
