A poor second half display costs Cliffe FC their place in the next round of the East Riding County Cup as Hull-based Waterloo FC comeback from 1-0 down to knock-out Cliffe by 3-goals-to-2.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Upon being knocked out of the County Cup Keith Tiplady said;
“We blew a guild-edge chance of a trophy in a poor display. After dominating it can only be described as disappointing.”
Cliffe FC possibly were guilty of scoring too early as Kev Taylor broke onto a loose ball to lash it past the ‘keeper and make it 1-0 within the first 60 seconds. From this point until half-time, Cliffe dominated possession and had many chances to pull further ahead. It seemed that these chances would continue to flow for Cliffe after the break.
The wind picked up after the break and for the first five minutes of the second half, Cliffe could not clear the ball out of their own half. Waterloo took advantage and levelled with a direct free-kick, 1-1. Cliffe then found themselves behind after a speculative effort ended up in the back of the net, Waterloo 2-1. The wind died down closer to the hour-mark and Cliffe’s didn’t manage to convert their half-chances and when Waterloo broke through once more they raced into a 3-1 lead. Cliffe never looked likely to score and in all honesty many of the Cliffe players looked beaten already. Luke Crowther managed to make it 3-2 as stoppage time approached but it would only count as a consolation as Waterloo go through to the Quarter Final.
