Cliffe FC and hosts Aviva repeat the 8-goal-thriller from last season, as Cliffe comeback from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with the Division Two leaders.
Hugo Delgado writes…
Against the run of play, Aviva opened the scoring with speculative long-range effort to make it 1-0. Cliffe equalised with a brilliant piece of teamwork involving Andy Kirkham, Chris Jackson and eventual scorer Ian Beckram that lashed the ball into the net, 1-1. Cliffe continued to play attractive attacking football and it was no surprise that Aviva reverted to their trademark-style; “playing the percentages.” The home side could have found themselves behind if it was not for the terrific performance of their ‘keeper who made 3 or 4 top-class saves. Aviva were lucky to keep 11 men on the field as Kevin Taylor found himself on a reckless challenge from Aviva’s #3. A nice bit of composure from Aviva’s #7 saw him roll the ball under Jamie Hawksworth and into the net to restore Aviva’s lead that remained at the break, 2-1.
The forth and fifth goals of the game fell the way of the home side who scored with their first two attacks of the second half to race into a 4-1 lead. Beckram earned Cliffe a penalty after being hacked down in the area and when Chris Jackson rolled the ball the wrong side of the post there looked no-way-back for Cliffe. The introduction of Nathan Horner and the returning Luke Crowther had their impact as Crowther volleyed the ball in from close range to make it 4-2 and Horner poached Cliffe’s third, 4-3, and the comeback was firmly on.
When Taylor was taken down from behind, Cliffe found their way to draw level as Crowther stepped up and fired the penalty into the back of net to make it 4-4 with about 10 minutes remaining. With momentum firmly with the away side, the potential winner came agonisingly close as Crowther had an effort crash off the underside of the bar and away from goal. Aviva also hit the woodwork before the referee brought an end to another entertaining 90 minutes between Aviva and Cliffe FC.
Cliffe FC can be pleased with a point after coming back from 4-1 down but with the difference of quality of football played between the two teams, Cliffe may have felt they deserved the win. The challenge of the York Football League Division Two does not let up for Cliffe as they welcome second-placed Stamford Bridge to the Bowling Green next Saturday and then third-placed Thorpe United on the 17th December. December is a vital month for Cliffe FC’s promotion hopes.
