Cliffe FC mark an all-round confident team performance with a 3-0 home win against Stamford Bridge, Steven Rowbottom grabbing his first goals in a Cliffe shirt.
Hugo Delgado writes…
The game began at a high-tempo but the football remained scrappy for both teams. Cliffe began to find their attacking rhythm but the defence still had to contain the threat of the away side’s target man, Stamford’s #11. The home side had a couple of well worked chances go wide of the mark and it was a defensive error that enabled Cliffe to take the lead as Stamford’s keeper failed clearance fell to Steven Rowbottom who rounded the keeper, rolled the ball into the net and put Cliffe 1-0 ahead 5 minutes before half-time. 1-0 HT.
Keith Tiplady wanted his side to make sure of the result and search for another goal as the second half became increasingly more and more stretched as both sides looked for another goal. The “little and large” strike partnership between Rowbottom and Luke Crowther continued to work well for Cliffe’s attacking efforts. Crowther doubled Cliffe’s lead with less than 15 minutes left on the clock with a placed left-footed effort that nestled nicely into the bottom corner, 2-0.
The Cliffe back-four and ‘keeper Jamie Hawksworth looked very solid whenever Stamford were on the attack to keep their clean sheet in-tact. Tiplady had made all 3 of his substitutions and it was his final sub, Matt Birch had the biggest impact, laying on Rowbottom to grab his second and put Cliffe out of sight at 3-0. The younger Birch sibling, Matt, also had time to nearly grab a goal himself, curling a shot just over the crossbar. FT Cliffe FC 3-0 Stamford Bridge.
For all the impact for his 7 minute cameo, the referee awarded Matt Birch the man-of-the-match award and Keith Tiplady named Steven Rowbottom his man-of-the-match for grabbing his first goals for Cliffe FC.
