Malcolm Bryce writes…
This match would bring back memories of Cliffe FC’s adventure in the East Riding County League Division Five as they traveled to face the Cottingham-based side. Cliffe started bright and took the game to Cott Road and had the lead when a delightful touch and poked cross from Kev Taylor was converted, at the second attempt, by Lee Carter, 1-0. Carter would have his second within the 20-minute mark when he aerial challenge wasn’t match by the ‘keeper and the ball ended up in the net, 2-0. Cliffe’s gulf in footballing ability became very apparent but Cott Road rallied and grabbed back a goal via a quality effort that flew past Ally Harris to make it 2-1. Keith Tiplady had to make an unplanned change when Dale Huntington had to leave the field having pulled his obliques and was replaced by Andy Kirkham. The front-pairing of Carter and Chris Jackson continued to pose a threat and Carter almost had his hat-trick when his shot crashed off the bar. 2-1 Cliffe at the interval.
Cliffe FC quickly had a chance to make it 3-1 early in the second half when a handball in the area awarded a penalty. Jackson’s spot kick was saved but Cliffe did make it 3-1 from the resulting corner when a Carter header was flicked-on into the net via Andy Addison’s head. Another penalty was awarded, this time Carter stepping up, the Cott Road ‘keeper again saving the spot kick and denying Carter his hat-trick. Man-of-the-match, Chris Jackson, continued to be the thorn in the Cott Road side and scored a deserved goal after beating the defender, rounding the ‘keeper and slotting the ball home from a tight angle, 4-1.
Jackson maybe should have earned at least two further penalties but his honesty and perseverance to stay on his feet went against him. Some quick footwork and tidy bottom corner finish from Addison in the Cott Road box saw Cliffe extend their lead in “showboat” style. Another quality finish saw Cott Road that again flashed past Harris and another goal from close range saw the final score read 5-3 to see Cliffe FC progress.
Cliffe FC showed their dominance is large periods of the game and together with the penalties that weren’t converted along with the many chances Cliffe did have, this game could have finished at double-figures. Cliffe now look towards next Saturday’s league visit of Huby United as Keith Tiplady’s side look to carve out some winning form.
