Firstly let me take this opportunity to welcome today’s visitors West Bridgford FC to Green Lane, in a game which already holds massive significance due to the disappointing start made by both clubs this season.
You only need look at the current league table to understand just how frustrated I am with our current plight and I know just how my counterpart and good friend Aaron Large must be feeling having not picked up any points as yet this term. Make no mistake that today’s game is almost must win for both clubs and although I appreciate both teams will go into this game low on confidence it could have the ingredients for a great game of football. The squad that West Bridgford select from is littered with some high profile figures and if they show up today and play to the levels expected this will as tough as any opponent we have faced already this year. I just can’t understand that with players such as Will Heath, Ryan Bowen, Pat Newsome, Jurgen Charlesworth, Francis Green, Carl Westcarr, Lee Potts and Greg Simmonds haven’t managed to muster a win for Aaron and as already mentioned it must be so frustrating seeing as though most of that batch have won medals at this level and levels above. They are either not giving the manager the commitment he deserves or making themselves unavailable for whatever reason and as much as it must be disappointing for Aaron I hope they show the same level of commitment today!
As for us, we find ourselves in a precarious position and something I haven’t had to face before of not winning a game in our last 5 encounters’. Again, like Aaron, I can possibly point the blame at commitment levels, underachieving, not doing the right things at the right time etc etc but ultimately the buck stops with me and the management team and despite being unlucky on certain occasions the facts remain that we just haven’t been good enough. Possession is great on the eye and its pleasing that we have players that want to get on the ball and express themselves but my old partner Steve Hardie always reminded me that if you can’t do what’s right in both boxes then you simply won’t win football matches and as he celebrates his birthday this week I can almost hear him in my right ear.” Goals win games and clean sheets win leagues! If ye canny do either then ya may as well stay home with ya Ma and find other ways to pay the rent, Son !!!
However, despite the disappointment of recent weeks and the sad departure of top goal scorer Daryll Thomas to Dunkirk, I still remain in positive beat about our capabilities as a team and although I appreciate we haven’t been good enough in crucial stages of games, I still have every belief that we have a squad capable of achieving something this term. Mitch Williams makes his long awaited return today and he possess the winning mentality that I expect from all of the boys. Robbie McNicholas slowly returning to fitness is also vital and of course our Captain Richard Whyman who takes losing games just as badly as I do, returning to the fold…..
Hopefully I don’t have to endure many more weekends like the last few and I can actually enjoy a Saturday evening and Sunday not going through processes in my mind as to what and where we could have done things differently.
Enjoy the game, have a pint and hopefully see you after….
