Part 12 Holder comes back to haunt the All Whites

3 months ago By Ray Smithson

Clifton include former Kimberley captain Kelvin Yeomans in their side to meet Long Eaton United

at Green Lane, Clifton (2.30) in a Midland League encounter on Saturday.

Yeomans was not eligible to play in lasrt weeks cup game for Clifton and so makes his debut this week. Included as substitute is 19year old Ian Muir, a Scottish FA Under 21 amateur player, who has come to live in the area and who has signed for Clifton.

Clifton Team: Foster, Walsh, Hallet, Shipley, Young, Yeomans,Simpson, Brookes, Byrne, Kalisak, Liversey, sub: Muir

Long Eaton: Mycroft, Collier, McGurk, Barrowcliffe, Elmore, Claypole, Holder, Limb, Smith, Brown, Stainwright, sub: Furrow

Ex Clifton player Holder put Long Eaton United two up by half time against his old club in this Midland League match at Clifton.

Long Eaton looked the more dangerous side in the early exchanges and only brave work by Foster, the Clifton keeper prevented Smith reaching a teasing Holder cross.

Foster was soon in action again and he capably held a speculative long range effort from Brown. Long Eaton went ahead in the 10th minute, the high point of their early pressure.

The hesitant Clifton defence failed to cut out a through ball and Holder beat Foster with a fierce drive.

But the goal far from discouraged Clifton and from Brookes pin point pass Young overlapped on the right wing to hit his shot only inches wide. Clifton began to play with more cohesion and Kalisak after setting up a chance for himself put his shot just past the post.

Clifton were unluky not to snatch the equaliser in the 25th minute but Liverseys header was just wide after he had outjumped the Long Eaton defence to meet Byrnes centre.

Two minutes before half time Holder grabbed his second goal with a delicate lob over Foster, after a four man move.

In the second half Brown added a third goal for Long Eaton to make it a decisive victory for the visitors.

Cliftons slump in their home match against Long Eaton has speeded up manager Brian harrisons search for a striker. The lack of goals in recent matches is worrying the Clifton boss who has been scouting regularly on Sundays in a bid to improve the position.

He is depending a great deal on the arrival of Ian Muir from Whitwell FC in Scotland. Muir was used as a substitute for the last half hour and impressed the Clifton officials.
