Part 16 - Advance for All Whites in the Notts Senior Cup - 8 Dec 1973

7 months ago By Ray Smithson

8 dec1973 Senior Cup Clifton 1 Retford Town 0

Special permission has been given by the Football association for both the first team and second team to play at the same time on both pitches on the Green Lane ground, Clifton on Saturday.

Both the games were due to be played last week but were called off due to the weather. The Midland League side are at home to Retford Town in the Notts FA Senior Cup while the second team entertain Sheepbridge Works in the Notts FA Intermediate Cup. Both games kick off at 2pm.

John Hallott is back for the first team after injury while first teamer Cuthbert and Walker are both out due to being cup tied.

Clifton looked lively at the start but Retford showed more confidence as the game progressed and Briggs brought out a fine save from Foster with a free kick.

Clifton first team v Retford: Foster, Shipley, Young, Hallot, Yeomans, Simpson, Byrne, Liversey, Kalisak, Deakin, Muir. Sub Brookes

Retford: Finch, O’Fee, Popple, Sadler, Knowles, Short, Briggs, Chappell, Wileman, Ashmore, Bailey. Sub Handyside

Clifton moved on to the attack from the start and a fierce shot from Liversey was just wide. Retford were given no time to settle as first Muir and then Kalisak brought diving saves from Finch.

Retford began to force the pace and Foster had to spring smartly to push a free kick from Briggs over the bar.

Minutes later a mix up between Foster and Yeomans almost presented Retford with the first goal. The full back misjudged his back pass and Handyside hit the ball across the face of the goal, but no one could get the final touch

Half Time: Clifton 0 Retford 0

The game evened out after the break with both teams threatening. It was Clifton however who went closest to scoring after 52 minutes. Byrne floated over a corner and with both Muir and Kalisak challenging Finch did well to punch over.

As the game went on Muir scored the winning goal to take Clifton through to the next round of the cup.

Clifton second team v Sheepbridge Works: Moore, Hudson, Cuthbert, Ford, Clements, Walker, Cousins, Edwards, Sinclair, Charlton, Clarke, Brinklow, Lockwood.
