Clitheroe Youth defender Rob Wong found himself in un-familiar territory yesterday, as did his whole side…

With the Youth side less than a year old, Thomas Bartlett’s men found themselves lining up for a semi-final game against Leyland Albion, knowing they were just ninety minutes away from a historic final.

The senior side’s semi-final exploits possibly heaped more pressure on the young side to impress. With Wong, who started on the substitute’s bench, eager to help his side progress on the road to success.

Come 12:30 on Sunday afternoon, Clitheroe Youth had defeated Leyland Albion 4-1 and the rest as they say is history.

Wong spoke of his joy after the emphatic victory and described the win as ‘a great achievement, especially with a final now confirmed for the young team;’

“It is a great achievement to reach any final. To reach the final with the group of lads we have is amazing. All credit to Mark (Wilson) and Tom (Bartlett) for helping us reach this stage. We really couldn’t have done it without their input and expertise.”

Beating a side in the form that Leyland Albion are in, is an incredible feat. Albion had scored sixty two goals in thirteen fixtures this season.

However, the Blues kept it tight at the back and Wong believes a lot of this is down to extra defensive work, the team has been doing in training every Wednesday night;

“The game went well. I thought we were the better side on and off the ball. Throughout the game we looked steady at the back and that was the key yesterday."

"We have not conceded a lot of goals this season. Tom and Mark set us a lot of defensive drills and it is safe to say they are paying off.”

The defender has featured in the majority of the Blues cup games this season. Picking up his solitary goal of the season, during the quarter-final 6-1 victory over Hurst Green last month.

Wong has been out of action for six weeks due to an ankle injury but made his long awaited return to action in the second half yesterday. The local lad finished by saying;

“We now have a great opportunity to not only win the cup but the league too. I’m sure we will go out to beat Bolton Lads & Girls Club later in the month and it would be a dream to help lift the trophy in our first season together.”
