T20 Preliminary Round Matches - 2

Report

Tea was quickly taken before the final match, Eymet v Catus, to see who would win the group. Skipper Horlock, astounded he had won the toss, elected to bat. Eloquent Ed and Big Ben went in to face Karim and Artik. Ben was bowled by Artik at the end of the 2nd over, and it was 11 for 1. Ahmed Jewel helped Ed to push the score to 39 before being stumped for 13. Numan replaced him but was bowled by Rahim for 10, 55 for 3 off 8 overs. In came Owais but Ed fell next for 37 with the score at 64 and Richard Brown made just one before being caught. 70 for 5 off 12 overs and Eymet were being pegged back. In came The Horlock to join Owais and steady the ship. The two actually rocked the boat somewhat making 40 and 53 respectively over the remaining 8 overs, David showing what should be done when you get a ‘free hit’, smacking it well on the way to the swimming pool for 6. He added the shot of the day, stepping to leg to make room and smashing another 6 over long off. Eymet reached 171 for 5 after 20 overs, a tidy score.

Catus started well, Farouk and Pavil scoring heavily as the bowlers were switched around to try to calm down the score. At drinks Catus were on top of the run-rate but, as this column often warns, the break can be fatal for the bats. It was the 11th over, score on 90, when Ahmed Jewel bowled Farouk. Bappy joined in for a while before being stumped by Ed off Twirler Tim for 7. The score continued to be amassed but wickets were falling, unsettling the visitors. The crowd in the stand were warming to the occasion with the tea ladies acting as cheer leaders. On the field, Pavil retired after feeling a leg strain, that old buffer, The Colonel, standing as “arbitre” hurrumphing something about “not an injury in the trenches”. Shafiq promptly hit successive 6s, but then ran himself out, leaving Catus to get 20 runs for the win off the last 2 overs. At last the Eymet bowlers found out how they should be bowling. Two defensive overs from Ahmed Shehzad and Owais resulted in just a few runs, but 3 more wickets, as Catus finished on 157 for 7.

Eymet win by 14 runs

Eymet 171 for 5 in 20 overs (O.Mohammad 53 no., D Horlock 40 no., Rahim 4-16).

Catus 157 for 7 in 20 overs (Pavil 63 rtd, Farouk 26, T.Chancellor 2-22, O.Mohammad 2-32)

The win means Eymet are in the final, to be held at Stade Bretou on Sunday 27th August, with Catus making it as the best losing team. Bordeaux Giscours CC are the 3rd, who did not need to struggle to win their group.

At drinks Eymet celebrated the win amid rumours of a minor earthquake in Eymet! Or was it Aussie Ben, flying for an attempted catch in the final match, and landing with a mighty thump ......................

Eymet: D Horlock, E Nicolson, B Delaney, A Jewel, N Uddin, R Brown, O Mohammad, P Singh, A Shehzad, I White, T Chancellor

Many thanks to the tea ladies and our sponsors, Cafe de Paris, The Pizzeria, Aquitaine Info and Danelander.
