Clydebank's 2nds XV served up a tryfest against old rivals Paisley as they ran out 39-22 winners.
On a cold afternoon Clydebank produced a fiery performance that warmed the hearts of the watching supporters. 7 tries gave the Bankies a home victory putting Clydebank in 4th position in their league.
The home side utilised the combination of experience and skill in the backs as the ball was fed out to the pacey back 3. Fullback Sean Smith scored the first try of the afternoon providing great support to the runs from back rows Roberts and MacLean. Clydebank kept the momentum up and David Bell rumbled over the line for the next score, McCombe converted. Poor kicking from the visiting team allowed left wing Jack Fraser to run at the Paisley defence opening them up. The Bankies scored again with captain Daniel Donnelly touching down for the third try after some great sidestepping and an audacious dummy. With pressure coming from all parts of the game the pack turned a Paisley scrum 5 yards from the try line. Scrum half David Kirkwood opportunistically plucked the bouncing ball as it left the scrum and ran the short distance to the try line to clinch Clydebank's 4 try bonus point.
Young prop Jack Burgoyne added another with a sublime score beating several tackles to score in the far right corner. More chances came for Clydebank but some poor decision making meant they spurned a few chances to score. Paisley scored their first try of the afternoon with the Clydebank defence posted missing.
The second half offered a more competitive contest but also presented the home team with some worries about their defence. Experienced heads of Bell and Watson added more scores for Clydebank but it was a truly team performance with a large squad all offering skill and determination. Paisley came out for the second half with a point to prove and exploited the Bankies inability to tackle at times running in 3 tries of their own in the second period.
An injury to young Jack Fraser 6 minutes from time led to the referee stopping the game early after discussions with both teams captains. Luckily his injuries were not found to be serious and hopefully we will be fit in no time. Next week Clydebank's 2XV travel into Lanarkshire to take on Dalziel hoping to make it four wins on the bounce. Meanwhile Clydebank's 1XV host Strathendrick at Whitecrook.
