Ladies start the New Year with a win
After a Christmas break the Ladies start the New Year with a win
With a full squad for the first time this season, tough decisions were made before the day to who would be rested. Not easy to make as the ladies have been fantastic all season, showing positivity and a real desire to improve.
The game began a little disjointed, with their being many transitions of play, where play was rushed too much from both teams. However, both teams found their feet and the game settled down, with Coalville dominating possession. Despite Coalville having over 60% possession, they didn’t test the keeper very often as they need to show more composure in the final third.
With this, Oadby & Wigston scored against the run of play with a world class forty yard screamer into the top corner. Nothing Hopkins in goal could do about that.
The reaction from Coalville was first class and scored their opening goal very quickly to level the score. Smith slotting into the bottom corner with finesse, showing a real eye for goal.
Coalville were really dominating the first half, without creating enough chances their fine play deserved. An unusual save from the Oadby goalkeeper with her leg was the best chance.
Oadby again scored an excellent goal, this time from twenty five yards.
Half time and Coalville were 2-1 down.
The Coalville managers recognised that Oadby weren’t really a threat up front and needed to test the Oadby keeper more. They changed the formation which was more attacking.
The second half began and Coalville were eager to get back in the game, again dominating possession. They soon levelled with Dolman firing a shot across the Oadby keeper after great build up play.
Coalville were hungry for more, however, were struggling to beat the Oadby keeper. The breakthrough came with a stunning through ball that split the Oadby defence for Dolman to run onto and get her second of the game.
Coalville were now relentlessly piling the pressure on, with Oadby unable to retain possession. This was mainly down to the constant pressing in units from the Coalville players, with Oadby looking to go long to relieve the pressure. The Coalville back three of Simons, Coote and Davies were strong all game not allowing Oadby any time or space. They were showing real tactical awareness, sliding, delaying, tackling and maintaining possession with increasing confidence.
The fourth goal finally came from another corner expertly floated in by Coote. Coote had put many excellent corners in, adapting to the narrow pitch and keeping the Oadby defence guessing with good variety. And what a finish it was from Folkard, who powered the ball into the back of the net with an excellent header, leaving the Oadby keeper just standing watching.
Coalville finished strongly, however, were unable to increase their lead.
The midfielders of Moore, Jackson, Mullen and Canning were showing great energy and vision to dominate the midfield area.
Managers Howard and Briars continue to be impressed with the improvement from the squad. Howard explaining that the girls have so much potential and they are now unlocking this to get the results they deserve.
