Ravenettes Secure Back To Back Top Division League Titles

Another clean sheet the foundation of title success

Back to Back League Titles for our U13 Ravenettes a huge achievement from the girls. Today’s game was always going to be hard with 3 players unavailable and 3 strong players at that with others injured we were stretched to the limits. A chance for one of the U12 girls to step up and Ella Bird returning to play outfield.
We didn’t mention anything about the league title before the game and just tried to let the girls relax and play football. The girls lined up for the first time ever in a game without Isla Pink who has been a huge part of a strong defence, today we had Josie Holman, Sophie Chapman and Libby Ford at the back. Estella McDermott was brought into the team from the U12s and was put in front of the back 3 with Neve McDermott in the Middle and Millie Norton & Charlotte Smith starting out wide. Tiah Smith was again given the role up front on her own, Ella Bird who has played most her football as goalkeeper was the lone sub but soon came on to make a great impact.
The Ravenettes started strong and created a few early chances but failed to convert them and the nerves started to show a little as they maybe tried a little too hard at times. Tiah came off injured after a strong header which was a blow and me moved Charlotte Smith up front and Ella Bird came on to play on the right of midfield. Oadby & Wigston Bullets were not really causing any concern going forward and the majority of the game was played in their half of the pitch as Coalville looked for the goal.
Tiah came back on after 5 minutes and was determined to get the goal, working hard up front with some excellent balls from the midfield but the clear chance wouldn’t quite come. One excellent bit of play saw Tiah hit the bar and Millie Norton also created a couple of chances she just could quite convert in front of goal. The corners from Ella Bird were delivered right into the centre of the Oadby box but deflections, bad bounces etc just meant that chance was not falling right.
The half time whistle went at 0-0 with Oadby delighted to be holding on against the Coalville pressure. At half time we just told the girls to relax and play their football, with Josie and Sophie solid in defence we decided to move things around bringing Libby forward into the middle and dropping charlotte back into the defence the 3rd position of the game for charlotte who gives us the options we need at times as will play anywhere she is asked.
The second half got underway with again the vast majority of the possession with the Ravenettes as they looked for the opening goal. Libby Ford added the strength in midfield and the girls continued to press forward. Neve McDermott ran from her own half cutting through the Oadby midfield and into the box but although her shot beat the keeper again it went narrowly wide of the post. The next chance came from a corner delivered by Millie and the ball fell to Charlotte Smith in the box whos effort returned off the post. It was beginning to feel like one of those days when the goal just wont come.
But finally that goal did arrive and deservedly so, after some great work down the left from Millie who then feed Neve who took one touch to set it up before smashing the ball hard and low into the corner of the goal. When we need a goal Neve is often the one who comes up with it and that was her 28th goal of the season in League and Cup but the assist from Millie was vital.
The smiles return and the girls relaxed and their football improved with it, Tiah then sealed the game and the league title with a well earned goal and another good finish. Tiah didn’t stop today chasing nothings, pressurising players, working back to link up it was all there. It’s not an easy role up front by yourself but it’s a role Tiah does well.
Estella returned to the pitch as right back with Neve dropping in defence to give Sophie who has been amazing this season the remainder of the game playing in midfield. Further goals didn’t come but as the whistle blew it was job done and back to back league titles in the top division of girls football in Leicestershire. Well done Ravenettes
Player of the Match today went to Ella Bird it’s been a tough season for her but today she stood up gave 100% and played some great football. We have some great footballers all of whom will have ups and downs its how you react that makes the difference.
