Under 13s Edged Out by Burton in Season Opener
A brace from Ellie Kirk wasn't enough to take anything from the game as the Ravenettes fell to an opening day defeat.
The under 13 Ravenettes battled to the very end as their first game of the season ended in an unfortunate defeat on a rainy return to Alvaston Park.
Lauren was forced into a number of early saves as Burton started the game on top, with the pick of the bunch coming after 5 minutes as she denied the opposition’s number 24 from close range.
The defence remained strong for long periods of the half, making numerous vital interceptions and blocks. Burton did however take the lead in the 10th minute after no.16 slotted the ball into the net following a low cross.
Coalville responded with a chance of their own moments later as Ellie tested the keeper with a low shot after latching onto a long ball.
Ellie then went one better in the 15th minute as she earned the Ravenettes an equaliser. Estella drove through the middle before sliding the ball through to Ellie, who placed the ball into the bottom left.
The girls had to endure periods of pressure as the first half wore on, with Burton looking to regain their advantage. They almost did so in the 29th minute, as their no.29’s strike from near the halfway line cannoned against the crossbar.
Despite being on the back foot for a considerable amount of time, the Ravenettes battled back to end the half on a positive note, creating two big chances. Ellie cut into the box and saw her near post effort pawed away by the keeper before hooking a shot wide after a cross from Katie following the resulting corner.
Burton set the tempo right from the off in the second half, immediately testing the under 13’s defence. Lauren made a brilliant stop in the 35th minute as she denied no.29 after she raced through one on one.
Burton’s no.24 then struck the outside of the post before Ellie was denied twice at the near post by the opposing goalkeeper as the game sustained it’s high tempo.
The opposition then demonstrated their clinical streak, netting three quick fire goals to give them control of the match. Their no.29 raced down the left and arrowed a shot into the bottom right corner before no.24 smashed the ball high into the net minutes later after receiving a pass in the area. Their number 6 then added the fourth, racing through the centre before sliding the ball into the bottom left.
After being so unfortunate to concede so many in so little time, the Ravenettes brushed themselves down and began to fight back. Ellie doubled her tally with what could be the first headed goal for the under u13s side, nodding the ball past the keeper after a long range pass from Lauren.
The girls then clubbed together for one final push in a bid to get something from the game, mounting on the pressure in the final 10 minutes. Estella almost bagged a spectacular free-kick, with the keeper tipping over the goal bound effort.
A succession of corners then followed, with Emma having a curling effort turned round the post following numerous corners – with numerous takers.
Overall the girls did themselves proud, matching a very strong team for large chunks of the game. Burton just so happened to be the better team on the day, but the Derby League opener displayed many promising signs for the Ravenettes as their 2017/18 campaign gets underway.
