Report to follow.....With Josh Melling and Luis Vieira missing from last Saturday, Jake Stone had George Barnell and Montel Dore available again and they stepped back in at centre-back and left-wing respectively. Jacob Gartland moved back to right-back while there were also changes on the bench with Luke Bartley making a surprise return and Tom Brazier stepping up from the reserves. Early morning rain and blustery winds were going to make this difficult for the teams out there on the exposed Compton Park pitch, but at least the rain abated just before kick-off as correctly predicted by the BBC weather website.
An early corner for the visitors was headed clear by Barnell, but the young centre-half could easily have had his game ended on five minutes. A ball over the top held up in the wind and Callum Plowright got goal-side of his man and broke for goal, but Barnell fouled him before he could reach the box. Dan Stevenson may have got across meaning Barnell wasn’t the last man and from where I was standing I honestly couldn’t say, but referee Abdul Kadir deemed a yellow card sufficient and that is all that really matters. Jordan Henson went for goal from the free-kick, but his effort was well over.
A good break from Rothwell saw Henson get a first touch return pass from Plowright and get into the box on the left-hand side, but his attempted cross went straight behind the goal. Chipchase played the ball wide for Long who came inside and hit a low shot from the angle of the box, but young keeper Adam North narrowed the angle well and made a good save. The ball having gone back wide was returned in by Long and Dove did really well to get in a header at goal and was extremely unlucky to see the ball come back off the bar. As Dove was falling he managed to stick out his leg and get the rebound, but it bounced wide and Corinthians breathed a sigh of relief.
A nice interchange on the edge of the Cooks box gave Lewis O’Dell a chance just inside the box, but he shanked it well wide. Long intercepted a goal-kick and steered it into Dove’s path and the skipper hit his shot on the run from just outside the box, but was unlucky to see it fly just the wrong side of the post. Dore then tried to set up Dove sixteen-yards out, but his shot was blocked, then a decent run and low drive from outside the box from Ryan Ansell was dealt with comfortably by North. Good link-up play from Dore and Ansell created a crossing chance for the latter, but it drifted behind on the wind. Dan Stevenson won the ball in the air and it was steered wide to Ansell who ran into the space ahead of him before chipping it into the middle, but again it came down beyond the crossbar.
Cogenhoe continued to press with the wind in their favour and Ansell slipped the ball wide to Long who had a touch before firing a low shot on target, but it didn’t trouble North too much. Chipchase was caught in a tackle by Plowright but the referee waved play-on and Henson took it on inside the box on the left before firing a well-struck shot on target, but Lutter saved well.
Down the village end, Ansell swung in a corner beyond the far post and Long headed it back into the six-yard box, but Dore obstructed the keeper’s movement off the goal-line and Mr Kadir blew for the free-kick. Aiden Ginns brought the ball down really well on the edge of the Cooks box, but his shooting skills didn’t match-up and it went harmlessly wide. Ansell did well to find Long on the right, but North took his cross well, then hard work from Dore on the left saw him hold off a couple of defenders and tee up Jamie Inwood to cross, but as we had seen before already, the ball caught the wind and this time landed on the top of the net.
Chipchase ran on to a Dove flick-on to go past a defender in the box, but Ben Johnson timed his tackle to perfection and all Cogenhoe had was a corner. Ansell swung it in, again to far post, where Long headed it at goal, but it went right across the face of the six-yard box and wide. This was the last action of a goalless first half in which Corinthians would probably be the happier as they would have the advantage of the wind after the break, although the blustery nature of the weather wouldn’t make it easy for them.

The second period was really slow to find any momentum and although Corinthians edged possession in the first few minutes, they weren’t troubling the Cooks defence at all. Great determination from Ansell saw him break into the box before being tackled. He took the corner himself as usual, the visitors failed to clear the danger and it found it’s way to Dore who swivelled and fired in a shot, but it flew over the top. Dove used his strength to win back possession and play Dore in on the left of the box, but Dan Cooper was too strong and was able to see the ball out for a goal-kick.
Plowright hit a decent effort from distance, but Lutter had it covered as it sailed a couple of feet over the bar, then more good battling from Dove saw him feed Dore outside him, but Kalon Peniasko caught him late and became the second player to be shown the yellow card just after the hour.
Dove got his head to an out-swinging Ansell corner, but it wasn’t easy for him and he got neither power or direction behind it. Cogenhoe couldn’t get the ball away on the edge of their own box and allowed Corinthians a rare shot at goal, but Johnson pulled his effort wide of the mark. As we passed the hour mark, Rothwell made the games first change with Ginns being replaced by Aaron Lingley on the right of midfield, but it was Cooks who pressed next as Dove made a powerful run into the box, but his shot was blocked and Rothwell managed to clear. Chipchase played a ball to Dove and Peniasko failed with attempt to cut it out leaving the Cooks skipper free to make some yards. He played it to Ansell who steered it wide to Long who again forced a save from North with a low strike from an angle. The loose ball was returned into the box, I think by Gartland, finding Dove in the middle and he turned to give himself a yard before firing a low shot into the corner of the net and giving Cogenhoe the lead after 77 minutes.
Before play restarted, Jake Stone gave Ali Duncan a run on the right in place of Matt Long. O’Dell made a good run into the Cooks box on the left before cutting in towards goal. He got past a challenge, but he just lost control and although he got in a shot, Lutter made it difficult and saved well. Henson slipped as he tried a shot from a good thirty yards out, but Lutter was only saving a goal-kick as he moved to his right to claim. Jacob Gartland went into the book on 84 minutes, I’m guessing for something he said, while Rothwell made a second change with Pernell Taylor-Jacobs replacing Luke Phillips in an attacking change.
Lutter got down well to his left to save a low Henson free-kick and Lingley wasn’t balanced to get the rebound and the last action of note was the booking of Chipchase for kicking the ball away in injury time.

This was a scrappy game if I’m honest and we played better and lost last weekend, but sometimes you have to ‘win ugly’ in football. A heavy pitch and blustery wind made it tricky for the players today, but 100% effort was put in by both teams on a horrible day. We defended well all game and didn’t give much away today. Dan Stevenson gets my man-of-the-match today for an assured performance, but Stuart Lutter, Jacob Gartland, Jamie Inwood and George Barnell all deserve a lot of credit too. Ryan Dove always gives you 100% and was of course the match-winner, but in truth we weren’t at our best today, but just about deserved the win against a battling Rothwell Corinthians side. Dove was left on his own up front a lot today and he battled hard to make things happen, although the balls to him could have been better. Matt Long, playing out wide today, still had more shots on target than anybody else, while Ryan Ansell played in an unfamiliar role in the centre behind Dove and wasn’t as involved as he usually is in the game. Montel Dore has missed the last few games, but shook off the rust with an effective performance, while Séan McBride and Harry Chipchase gave their all in the centre of the park in a game where the visitors had good spells in controlling that area.
It’s great to get back to winning ways after a couple of defeats on the road and we are back here next Saturday when Boston Town are the visitors.
