Irchester United Reserves player-manager Chris Gell on their 2-2 draw at Cogenhoe United Reserves:
"Today was one of those games, could have won it, maybe should have lost it but happy with a performance and a point.
First half we started ok against a good Cogenhoe side. Without threatening particularly, then as they grew into the game we had a wobble, Sam Foulser made a tremendous save followed by a huge block from Nick Marriott, they took the lead from a corner we just did not defend third in a row and the pressure told, and it was my man.
Then from the next corner David Boddington made another huge challenge on the line and forced the ball over, managers are always quick to point out defenders mistakes but if it weren't for those challenges and Sam's save we would have been 3 down and struggling. But somehow we stayed in it.
It was techy and over dramatic in our changing room at half time with tensions running too high for my liking, we challenged the players to direct that aggression into their second half performance. And to be fair they did, we got a stroke of luck when a Dan Bailey free kick went straight with a combination of wind and misjudgement.
We seemed to kick on and then from another corner we gave a penalty away, which they benefitted from but our reaction was good and Marcus Dowman was put through by the pass on the match from an ageing centre half and coolly finished to give us a share of the points.
A word on the ref, good young lad, learning the game, he will do well, their bench was unhappy that he blew up early, I'd be careful what you wish for in football, they might have had time to win it but they also could have lost it, but for me I've had 2 of my lads booked, one deservedly for a silly tackle, and one for over aggression, but when our striker was away down the left hand side and pulled back by two hands on his shirt from their left back, it's a clear a yellow card you will ever see and it's not given and then he books two of ours, not happy. But he was a great lad and will be a good ref I think.
In short happy with a draw.
