Inspiration from a legend perhaps!

CTCC Sunday 2nd vs Boxted 31st May 2015

The weather forecast for Saturday night/Sunday morning was extremely poor and expectations for completing the “new 2’s” game on Sunday were low. Therefore it was a nice surprise to arrive at Harefield and see a wicket fully covered and much less rain having fallen than was expected. Unfortunately it was soon pointed out that the wicket covered wasn’t actually for our match! Fortunately the ground guys and the weather came together to produce a wicket that would lead to an exciting match.
As always the Sunday 2’s were a mixture of “experience” and youth but Sundays team took this to an extreme with just 3 players over the age of 17! Fortunately Coggeshall are benefitting from the hard work of the colts coaching and administration put in over the years which is producing a crop of talented individuals.
Captain David “Gibbo the elder” Gibson lost the toss and Boxted, after a little deliberation, put Coggeshall in to bat on a firm but slightly damp wicket.
The 2’s opened with Charlie “Gibbo the not so elder” Gibson and Louis “Gibbo the least elder” Gibson. Louis has had a great season so far and was immediately into his stride pushing runs and finding the boundary whereas Charlie took a little time to find the middle of his bat!
These two accumulated runs and set a strong base with a partnership of 87 before Louis was caught for 34. Charlie was then joined by Max Brassington. Max has made the number 3 position his own in this side this season and seen his confidence build with his runs tally. Unfortunately for Max at this stage we had had further rain and the wicket had become a little more lively making batting a tad tricky. Max found runs hard to come by and was LBW for a couple. Enter Andy “the Fridge” Fairhurst. Andy also struggled with the renewed “zip” in the wicket and was undone by a little extra bounce that brushed his glove through to the wicket keeper.
Next up was all-rounder Jonjo McCabe. JM who has had a run of bad luck this season and just as he , again, began to look comfortable took a knock whilst diving to complete a single and injured his knee. JM had to retire hurt bringing Tom “all-rounder” Rowe to join Charlie at the wicket. At this stage CTCC were 121 – 3 after 30 overs and were in a good position to push on to a large total. Tom and Charlie accelerated the run rate with Charlie, particularly now punishing the opposition bowling. This pair put on 54 in 7 overs before Charlie was eventually caught for 106. This was his first league century and well deserved. Tom was joined by Sam “ Don’t worry Dave you don’t need to put your pads on ” Docherty who with TR began to enjoy the tiring bowling attack and together they put on 17 in the last couple of overs taking the CTCC score to a seasons best of 189.
A fine tea was enjoyed by both teams thanks to Julia “ Gibbo clearly the youngest looking” Gibson!!
The beauty of captaining the new 2’s is the abundance of youth who can bowl. Looking around the team it was tough to see who would open as I seemed to have six opening bowlers! Additionally of course the youngsters can do all the chasing in the outfield!!
Sam Docherty and Ellis Valentine, both Under 15s, opened the bowling with some disciplined lines and immediately made it difficult for the batsmen to score. Ellis made the early breakthrough bowling the Boxted opener with just 10 scored. Sam bowled a tight spell with just 19 runs coming from his 6 over spell. After EV finished his permitted overs with remarkable figures of 1 for 5 off 4 debutante Ben Ather was given the ball. Under 14 Ben is new to the Sunday 2’s but controlled his nerves to bowl a tidy spell. The left hand/right hand combination caused a few problems but in the end Ben bowled his allowed 4 overs for just 25 runs and will definitely be called up again in the future! Boxted were moving slowly forward before CTCC made the next breakthrough. Louis Gibson was on and tempted the Boxted number 2 into a wild swing which saw the ball go straight up into the grey sky and then head down toward new boy Ben! Hearts were in mouths as the ball accelerated toward the debutante but Ben rose to the occasion and casually snaffled the catch! The next batsmen in had a little history with CTCC from a 3rd XI match a few weeks prior. Alledgedly, a snick behind heard by most Coggy players had not registered with him and he went on to score a few runs. It was therefore quite ironic that when he was given out LBW to Tom Rowe he did seem to think he had hit the ball!! Boxted were at 97-3 from 25 and well in the hunt but sadly had to advised us that one of their players had had to leave due to injury and they were down to 10 men.
Coggy stayed disciplined and as the weather improved continued to make inroads into the Boxted middle order. Tom continued to take wickets, including a fine catch by under 14 Oscar Johnson,, Jonjo bowled a tight spell with no reward and Louis finished his spell with just 1 wicket. Ellis Valentine came back for another spell capturing his second wicket with an edge to Charlie “Can I bowl now?” Gibson, behind the stumps. CTCC were well on top and with Tom Rowe completing his first 5 wicket spell at CTCC and Sam Docherty talking the last wicket Coggy were home and dry and had their 2nd consecutive win!
Another enjoyable game played in a good spirit with the boys from Boxted and the young’uns from CTCC continue making progress up the league table.
