MATCH REPORT
By Craig Hamilton
In the 1st minute Uni win the call in midfield and some nice play down their left forces the first corner of the game but Coleshill defended well and cleared. Coleshill start to get into the game and a ball over the Uni defence finds Leek but his heavy touch sees the ball run out of play then a right wing free kick is cleared at the near post by the Uni defence.

Its not all Coleshills way as a through ball to Aromalaran sees him cross low into the 6 yard box but is cleared for a corner which is cleared easily. Then Evans wins the ball for Coleshill and plays a ball over the Uni defence for Gardner to run onto but King in the Uni goal comes out to smother the ball.

Its now end to end play and good build up play by Uni sees the ball played to the feet of Boachie he turns and shoots from 20 yards but sees his shot skim the top of the bar. Coleshill then go close as Edmunds knocks ball past left back into area but shot goes wide of near post. This spurs on Coleshill and they have several chances to score but Uni defend well.

Uni then have a chance themselves as Boachie runs clear on goal but Hathaway saves at his feet. Coleshill then gain the advantage as a mix up in defence sees ball fall to Rathbone who chips the ball over centre half to Edmunds who fires the ball into the net from 18 yards 1-0 33 minutes. Then a one two between Rathbone and Edmunds sees the ball flash across the 6 yard box and cleared but Coleshill win the ball back and a low cross is slid into the net by Rathbone from close range 2-0 35 minutes gone.

The game is played at a good pace and both sides have chances to score first Gardner heads over for Coleshill and then Moran fires over for Uni but the half finishes with Coleshill on top 2-0.

Coleshill start the 2nd half on the front foot but fail to make a corner count and then Uni danger man Boachie turns in the area but sees shot blocked. Then a Rathbone free kick is well saved by King in the Uni goal and Gardner follows up to score but is flagged off side. Edmunds then intercepts a pass on the halfway line looks up and trys a Beckham but sees his chip land on the top of the net.

The game sees a string of free kicks from both sides break up the flow of play both sides still have chances but the game is wrapped up for Coleshill when a long ball is chased by Leek but the keeper gets to the ball first but sees his clearance hit Leek on the back and fall to the feet of Dainty to side foot into the empty net 3-0 86 minutes.

Some good football played by both sides but Coleshill proved to good for Uni on the day.

LOUGHBOROUGH ECHO WROTE
Students Yet To Find Their Feet Against Experienced Rivals

THE Students had a tough opening fixture at the home of last season’s runner-up Coleshill Town and couldn’t have too many complaints about a 3-0 loss.

Coleshill are an experienced side and have been together for a few seasons now whilst the Uni side were forced into making changes from the side that had gone out the FA Cup the previous week and included a much changed back four and it showed.

It will probably be a few weeks before Karl Brenan can field a settled side as players slowly return to the campus from various activities such as vacations and placements, plus there are a few ‘Fresher’s in the side finding out what life is like at this level of football.

There wasn’t a lot to choose between the sides in the opening half an hour although Jake King in the Students goal had to be alert when coming out to make a superb save at the feet of a Coleshill forward.

Shortly afterwards the Students went close when the ever alert Joe Boachie fired a rasper of a shot that hit the top of the bar with the ‘keeper well beaten and Boachie was then denied by the home ‘keeper when he raced through only to see his effort well blocked. In between Coleshill should have scored when they were through clear on goal but the shot was pulled wide.

In the space of five minutes the Scholars hopes were all but ended as they conceded two goals.

The first came about when the inexperience in the Students defence showed and the ball was only partially cleared allowing the home side to take advantage and set up a chance for Ryan Edmunds to blast the ball home from the edge of the box.

That inexperience was even more evident as the Uni appealed for an offside decision that was never going to be given and they were all over the place as Rathbone rolled the ball into the net.

There was still time for Boachie to send another good effort just over the top but on a G3 pitch and two goals adrift at halftime it wasn’t turning out to be what the Uni had hoped for from the first League game of the season.

However, credit to them for making a far better fist of things in the second half when they matched Coleshill for long periods of the game but in fairness it was the brilliance of ‘keeper Jake King that kept them in the game as he pulled off two superb saves midway through the half, one in fact a double save following a rocket of a free kick that he did well to keep out and he deserved the plaudits from the onlookers.

The final goal came in the closing minutes and was a result of the Students own poor play. Taking a free kick which should have been put into the opposition box they chose to play across the field and the ball was intercepted. A catalogue of errors followed allowing Dainty to fire home from just inside the penalty area.

The Students, naturally, are a very young side and will need time to adjust to football at this level but on the other hand Coleshill will surely be one of the stronger sides in the division so it was a lesson for the learning.
