Rangers secure the title
Colron arrived in Lichfield to face Darwin Park for a 6.30pm kick off, following a day of almost non-stop heavy rain.
The 2 sides met on the opening day of this month & despite the fact Rangers were league leaders, they only managed a one-nil victory over their bottom placed opponents.
Rangers headed into tonight’s match with a record of 17 victories, 1 draw & no defeats, although, due to the fact that Beacon Stars were still hot on their heels all the way, this was the first opportunity for the boys to mathematically clinch the title.
There was no complacency among the team, they knew from the previous encounter that Darwin Park could be tough, stubborn opponents, would there be any nerves from the lads?
As the game began, both sides were eager to gain the upper hand & Colron had a couple of attempts at goal.
After just 4 minutes, Sam shot from distance & the ball skidded off the greasy surface & slipped through the Darwin keeper’s hands into the net, a dream start for Colron, now to see if they could build on the early strike & ease the nerves of the Colron support.
As witnessed on many occasions this season, the early goal saw Colron settle into playing some sublime football at times & it looked as though it was just a question of time before they added to their lead.
They were denied on a number of occasions by the keeper, but, then in the 10th minute, Dan charged towards goal & hit a fine shot which nestled in the back of the net, two-nil to Colron.
It was Colron that had the upper hand for the next 10 minutes up to half time, although they had not added any further goals to reward their supremacy.
HALF TIME: Darwin Park 0 – Colron Rangers 2
In a number of games, particularly of late, Rangers have really taken charge of games in the second half, we did not have long to wait before they showed this again when, following an assist from Oscar, Sam added his 2nd goal of the night, his 22nd of the season!!!
Sam then repaid the compliment setting Oscar up, who scored to make it 4-0.
Colron were now in complete control of the game, although Darwin did look certain to score at one point, until Oscar came sprinting back & made an excellent challenge to clear the ball, excellent tackle Oscar, well done mate. It is this kind of determination from the boys all season that has kept the goals conceded column looking so impressive, 12 conceded in 19 games.
These boys do not give up, even when in a comfortable lead, they do not want to concede even a single goal.
Equally, they keep striving for more goals, right up to the final whistle & gained another tonight with one of the best goals I have seen from them all season.
Ellis played a short corner to Eddie, who returned the ball instantly to Ellis. He then looked up & delivered a beautiful cross into the area, where Oscar, not only rose high to head, but, planted a thunderous header beyond the helpless keeper, his 17th goal of the season. 5 nil to Rangers & that was how it finished.
At the end of the game the teams lined up, gave three cheers to each other & then the Rangers players began to celebrate a success that had been the result of a long, hard season, they were literally jumping for joy & deservedly so.
We now head into our last game of the season, assured of being League winners, & although that is the case, knowing these boys as I do, I know that will not change the way they approach Sunday’s game. They will be playing to win, playing to ensure that they finish the league season unbeaten!!
I was so pleased for each & every one of the players, I cannot express what a fabulous achievement this has been for them in their 1st season together, this time last year, many of them had never even met.
Obviously, winning the league is fantastic for them, importantly, I also think that they have developed as people, gaining confidence in themselves through inter-acting with children from outside of their home & school circle of friends.
I am so proud of them all, a feeling I think all of the parents, friends & relatives that have watched them will share.
Thanks to all that came & supported & joined in the celebrations at the end of the game.
Man of the Match went to the whole team, not only because of the way that they all played & contributed tonight, but, as a reward to all of them for the season’s efforts.
Well done Champions, let’s give it one more big effort on Sunday, to finish the season in style.
