Match Report Combe Down Minis Vs Old Reds
Sunday 15th April|By Adrian Sprake
Old Reds Bought came to the Glasshouse with only their U9's and U12's but this didn't make the matches any less competitive.
The U9's were captained by the ever impressive Alex K. He set the tone in the first match with quick first up tackles and organised his side well. A midfield battle ensued with fine tackles from McKenzie W, Aidan M and Marley H until Robbie A used his blistering pace to score a brace in the corners. Reds rallied and levelled before pulling ahead 3-2. Combe did not panic and after some great handling and support play Jamie B scored followed by another for Robbie and one for Harvey but Reds squeaked it 5-6. The second game saw Combe start fast with try's for Aidan, Robbie and Jamie. This was soon 5 when Aidan scored again and Robbie added another. Great work up the middle by Rory opened up Reds for Combes fifth before Reds tried to make a come back but to no avail as Combe ran out convincing 6-3 winners.
The U 12's had a hard fought match earlier in the season with their Bristol opposition and they expected more of the same. Combe Down were out of the blocks straight away with the fastest free flowing play they had played all season, and it was to be the downfall of the large but not too agile Old Reds team they had encountered 6 months earlier.Good movement from forwards then backs then forwards again saw Will crash over first with Sam converting. Ben then went over and Louis converted as Old Reds scored once in reply but missing the conversion to leave the first quarter 14-5. It was Old Reds who came out stronger in the second 15 mins scoring 19 points to Combes 7 making the score 21-24 going into the final 15 after Peter scored his try and Sam converting. The final 15 saw CD come into their own with tries from Bradley and Sam (with Louis converting both) making the final score 35-24. Fast flowing rugby had been the key to this win. All the tries coming from the forwards but only after the backs had helped get them into those positive positions they could create from.
