Congleton under 14,s versus Crewe and Nantwich under 14,s.

Both teams turned up full strength to kick off the New Year on Hankinsons Field on Sunday. The weather was at least dry and flippers were not required.

Congleton kicked off and the ball was immediately spilt by a Crewe forward. From the scrum Horgan picked up the ball and went on one of his trademark mazy runs, only being tackled within the opponents 22.Crewe then began to exert pressure, winning a scrum. The ball was quickly recycled to their winger ,who dashed over in the corner to open the scoring.

From the kick off poor Congleton tackling enabled their opponents to run half the length of the pitch to score under the posts..Stung by their poor start Congleton then began to exert some pressure of their own.The team effort was rewarded when a good rolling maul enable Horgan to sprint away and score,Burkard converting.

Crewe then raised their game when their winger went over in the corner. The game then entered a period when both teams went back and forth, defending then attacking in turn.Crewe further increased their lead when the backs exploited a gap in the Congleton defence and the centre went over in the corner.

Half Time.Congleton 7 --- Crewe and Nantwich 22.

From the kick off Congleton commited the cardinal sin of allowing the ball to bounce. This allowed Crewe the momentum to surge forward and score under the posts.Congleton rallied and tried to exert pressure of their own.Crewe scored a try by intercepting a pass meant for the winger.

Congleton,to their great credit, refused to let their heads drop and continued to attack, only desperate defending from Crewe prevented them from scoring.Crewe scored three more tries before the full time whistle went.

This was one of those games when nothing went right for Congleton throughout the game. They were up against a very good, well drilled outfit.Congleton gave of their best and continually took the game to their opponents.Well done to all who took part. The scoreline does not reflect the effort Congleton put in and,on another day,the score could be much closer.
