Bears into the next round of the Macron Cup
The Bears ran out comfortable winners at First Division Barnton on Saturday. Several changes were made to the starting eleven, but four goals and a clean sheet were an excellent return.
The Bears were ahead in the first few minutes. Tom Morris picked up the ball on the edge of the box and let fly, 1-0. They kept up the pressure with Billy Hasler-Cregg putting in teasing crosses and Foster and Adegbenro going close. Home keeper Arran Lyons was on top form, saving well and marshalling his defenders. On 15 minutes he made an excellent double save when John Main put a shot in. Barnton’s best chances came when Malone was involved and on the half hour he linked well with Wilson-Jones to bring out a smart save from Rob Cooke.
The Bears almost doubled the score a few minutes later, Hasler-Cregg to Main saw his powerful shot hit the side netting. The second goal did come on 34 minutes. Dom Williams found Steve Foster and the latter fired past Lyons. It was now all Bears and the chances were coming thick and fast. Foster to Hasler-Cregg, shot blocked then Tom Schofield had a chance but put the ball over the bar. Rick Peters then saw a similar outcome from his shot. Barnton had a couple of chances as the half drew to a close but Cooke was strong and saved well.
Half Time Barnton 0-2 Congleton Town
The Bears continued to dominate in the second half, Foster turned in the box and found Mini Adegbenro, he was brought down as he made to shoot and a penalty was awarded. He stepped up to take it himself but a great save by Lyons low to his right thwarted him.
Main then came close with a shot from outside the box which Lyons turned over the bar. Barnton had a couple of chances from a free-kick which was blocked and then a shot across goal which eluded everyone.
The Bears extended their lead on 65 minutes. Sub Bevan Burey crossed into the box, perfectly onto the head of Adegbenro who nodded home from 4 yards out. 3-0. The Bears then bought on Dean Warburton and Dan Cope and continued to pile on the pressure. Cope won a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Barnton blocked it well. Morris almost got his second on 75 minutes. A corner taken by Schofield was half cleared to the edge of the box and Morris volleyed it back just over the bar. Schofield then almost found Cope with a cross as Barnton were being kept on the back-foot.
The final goal came on 85 minutes. Another Schofield corner fell perfectly to Cope who had a simple tap in to make it 4-0. A minute later he almost made it 5 but his shot was just wide.
