Bears on the march in the Senior Cup
The Bears put their recent good run to the test at Altrincham, 3 divisions above them in the pyramid. They welcomed back Antony Griffith and gave a first start to Saul Henderson.
The opening exchanges saw both sides eyeing up their opponents and it was Craig Ellison who made the first save first from a deep cross and then down low to smother a shot.
The opening goal came on just 11 minutes. A great run and shot by Dan Cope saw his effort hit the post, Altrincham partly cleared and the Bears regained possession. Bev Burey played a pinpoint ball to Saul Henderson who beat 2 defenders and the keeper to shoot and score. 1-0 Bears.
More Bears pressure saw a free-kick from Dean Warburton blocked and a testing cross from Dominik Williams caught. The home side were applying very little pressure on Ellison’s goal and he dealt with things easily. Burey had a chance with a shot from outside the box, which the keeper saved. Cope went close on the half hour with a shot that whistled past the post.
On 40 minutes the Bears doubled their lead. They won a free kick 10 yards outside the Alty box, Cope stepped up a curled the ball beautifully in to the top corner of the net, 2-0. Henderson and Cope both had chances in the dying seconds but couldn’t finish.
Half Time: Altrincham 0-2 Congleton Town
The second half began with both sides looking for an opening and it was the Bears who made the first real chance. A great move led to a corner, made by Cope, his pass across the pitch to Burey saw him weave and pass to sub Mini Adegbenro, his shot was blocked by the home keeper. The Bears were now looking comfortable and Henderson went close after Rick Peters and Burey linked well to set up the chance.
On the hour Altrincham almost got one back, Gabbidon had a shot which Ellison first parried then got down smartly to save a close range effort. The home side created a few half chances but none really threatened the Bears goal.
Half the lights went out with 8 minutes to go, but thankfully, five minutes later they sparked back into life.
Both sides kept pushing in the final minutes and Ellison and the Bears defenders worked well to limit their hosts chances. Henderson had the final Bears chance but blasted the ball over the bar.
